So i bought the new slim xbox in june, i hadn't played abox prior to that for months. I'am already bored of it, I've always had this problem. I was looking on amazon to price some older consoles...n64, nes, snes, even a ps2(just for kingdom hearts 1&2.) I've owned both a ps2 and n64 so maybe i should try something new? Snes is the only system i havent played and people tell me all the time I'm missing out...just want to know what you guys think i should look into.

p.s.-I want to get into zelda

Well, you sound impulsive and unhappy. Maybe video games may not have what you're looking for. Just a thought.

Yeah you can't go wrong with a Dreamcast. There is also PC gaming which has GOG that can cater to your retro needs and Steam if you want a bit of modern gaming.

ZSNES + torrents. You can about 800 games in just a few minutes, and once you mess around with the visual settings in ZSNES, you can get it looking pretty close to the way it did on old tube televisions.

Also, I've got to say that playing old SNES games (like Earthbound, which could easily run you hundreds of dollars if you were to track down a cartridge) with an Xbox 360 controller is just plain awesome.

SNES it is then :)

but if you get a Wii and a Classic Controller, you can get most of the important games a lot cheaper on the Wii's Virtual Console than on eBay AND you have reliable save systems since you don't need to worry about dying batteries. It's only an issue if you really wanna delve deep into it and find a niche game isn't on the VC. But then you can do an easy software mod and use emulators for the rest. Since the Classic Controller is pretty much an SNES controller with added analog sticks, you get a pretty authentic experience out of that. Plus you the option to play GameCube stuff (unless you buy the revised model from last year that dropped GCN support!) and download other older games from the VC.

...what games did you end up getting? Rather than having to buy a whole new library, why not just buy games that fit your style more? It's not like there's any kind of game (other than JRPGs) that doesn't exist on the Xbox...

For example, Zelda. You should check out Darksiders, Dark Souls, Fez, and Skyrim.

The real challenge is finding the 28 inch TV that is deeper than it is wide and possibly has rabbit ears. Rounded screen. The old school "flat screens" from 2000 or so are not acceptable.

The next challenge after that is getting someone to take you seriously when you need them to help you carry the 200 pound monster up to your apartment, or perhaps down to your home basement or whatever. It's a totally different experience than playing "virtual console" or whatever that stretches old games onto a modern screen.

I've been randomly reobtaining portable game systems (i.e. GBA SP and DSi) and dabbling in flash cards...and buying the newer games and the ones I care about, of course. Still need to buy Ghost Trick. That game's pretty awesome.

Wow really? I mean, to each his own I guess. Those game were pretty cool, but they fall pretty low on the Zelda scale for me. I'd suggest checking out my blog for my opinion on all the Zelda games.

Perhaps you shouldn't recommend illegal alternatives. Those are frowned upon by many. Just saying. I'm not whining.

OT: SNES might be hard to get games to, in my experience. A Wii might be a good choice. While the Wii-games themselves don't bolster especially much on the quality side of things, the GC compability and NES/SNES/N64/GB games on Virtual Console does. The games are a bit pricey though, and that's unfortunate. Luckily the Wii is cheap.

The only reason I suggested ZSNES and torrents is that SNES games aren't manufactured anymore and, as far as systems go, you'd be lucky to find a cheap Chinese 2-for-1 knockoff system. Even if you did buy any of those physical media or devices, your money wouldn't be helping the original developers or producers. It would just go in the pocket of a secondhand seller. True, many SNES games are on the Virtual Console, but then again many aren't and, let's face it, the ones that are on the VC have highly inflated prices. That's not to say that high price is justification for torrenting - I'm morally opposed to torrenting in most cases myself - but seeing as how the last SNES game was made around two decades ago, I think it's safe to say that the system has had its run.

Yup, buy a PC. I'm fairly certain the cycle would repeat with any new or "new" console, and at least a computer would still be useful after the fact.

For example, my GBA has been out of its drawer, oh... six times since I bought it three years ago.

A Gamecube supporting Wii is gonna let you play a whole host of titles from different platforms (thanks to VC)... if you're not looking to do gaming on a PC.

Yes, that's exactly what I said. But a PC is, as far as I'm concerned, preferable due to the sheer amount of gaming variety available, along with all the other quirks that come with it.

Unfortunately, I don't have one myself. Just a laptop that can play older games, which I use a lot.

I agree you won't get the nice fuzzy picture, but there's no need to stretch the image; the Wii and 360 (and the PS3 too, I imagine) do 4:3 just fine.
