So I occasionally glance at the Twitter/update feed on the main page of the site, and I saw Ryan's latest just now:

RT @NSSteph: *clappity clap* :D RT @OneOfSwords Back to the Future Blu-ray is official, coming October - http://is.gd/d7Upw (Thx @mweigand)

Is it me, or at some point does the combination of @ signs and 'RT' make the whole thing look like gibberish?  It feels like something that a human being isn't supposed to be interpreting directly, like markup for some more sophisticated reader (Ryan reposted NSSteph's tweet: *clappity clap* :D to OneOfSwords's reposted tweet: ... )

But the tweets are displayed raw so often, that I guess at some point you can interpret that? I think the usage of RT @name breaks it for me.  I read '@' as 'at' and not necessarily as a possessive as it is sometimes intended.

I'm a programmer with some LISP background, and I have some ability at reading obfuscated stuff, but at some point in the process my brain just breaks.  Maybe I'm too old :).  Do people just get used to it, or are folks generally using Twitter readers that make sense of this for you?

Once Rt and @ is used, I turn into my grandma trying to read her email.

It used to be a little confusing to me, if you get a train of them it is pretty tough.  But you get used to it.  You learn to just process it and understand it as you see it.

I thought I was the only one.

Facebook I get. Twitter? Not so much.

RT @NSSteph: *clappity clap* :D RT @OneOfSwords Back to the Future Blu-ray is official, coming October - http://is.gd/d7Upw (Thx @mweigand)

Quoting user @NSSteph
Message: *clappity clap* :D
Quoting user @OneOfSwords
Message: Back to the Future Blu-ray is official, coming in October - URL (Thanks User @mweigand)

Basically, Ryan quoted @NSSteph, who quoted @OneOfSwords who got the word that the Blu-ray was released in a message from @mweigand

The replies to this are making me feel less out of touch than I thought :).

I know what RT stands for (I guessed it at ReTweet when I first saw it), but the level of nesting implicit in some of this markup is way more than people can comfortably talk about in real speech.

The reason I ended in '...' in my example of what it might look like is that nesting gets hella awkward in English.  At some point the Twitter code is describing something that would be hard to describe any other way, and I think that's why I can't seem to wrap my brain around it.

Seriously I challenge anyone to re-write that tweet in a non-awkward way using real words.

I can work backwards if I break it down like that, but I can also understand regular expressions, and I would never suggest that Regex is a good way to communicate with other people.

Feels like programming speak, not communication, is all.

It makes more sense once you use twitter more and more. And considering that I have almost 10.000 tweets, I'd say I've been around.

Once it goes beyond one person quoting another, it becomes a Goddamn agricultural sim and I don't know what's going on.

Ahem.

Edit: If you want this translated, you need to take out the spaces. It was one whole line that went off-screen, so I had to space it myself to fit on Giant Bomb. If you want to translate, again, TAKE OUT THE SPACES.

When I first joined Twitter some of that stuff was a little confusing, but I got the hang of it.
