I'm looking for some good instrumental albums or bands to listen to while I study got any suggestions?  I've got Holy Fuck and Mogwai covered and have some movie scores from everything Clint Mansell, along with Tron, A Social Network and Inception.

What do you mean by "instrumental"? It's not like that's a genre.

Anyways:

That's what I have off the top of my head (besides Sousa, because I'm guessing you're not looking for marches). Also, SRV did a ton of music with vocals as well, but his instrumental songs are quite excellent (although the quality of that video is fairly poor).

EDIT: oh, and Time Out is one of the best albums of all time. Not even just instrumental albums, but albums in general.

Mahavishnu Orchestra is by far my favorite Instrumental band. A little progressive rock can go a long way.

@LackLuster: OK, I just wasn't sure if you were looking for specific genres. There are classical compositions I could recommend (theoretically, although I mostly just listen to WGBH Classical out of Boston, and I don't really know the names of the songs), and there's literally tons of jazz out there with no vocals. Almost all Big Band groups didn't have vocalists, and many famous jazz groups go without, because that's not their style. Miles Davis, for instance, doesn't really have a lot of vocals from what I can recall.

Also, it's not strictly instrumental, but there's plenty of Celtic music where the vocalists sing in Gaelic, so you'll have no clue what they're saying anyways (except on the extremely small chance you actually understand Gaelic), in addition to tons of Celtic music without vocals at all.

I was asking because I can go off on all kinds music available, but if you're looking for techno or new age, I have no useful information for you.

Explosions in the Sky are pretty good from the few songs I've heard by them.

This man is on the ball. I'd particularly second the Sigur Rós, Eluvium, 65Daysofstatic, Mono, Explosions in the Sky, Godspeed You! Black Emperor recommendations.

(although at the very least of those, Sigur Rós have vocals, as do GY!BE, but sod it they're a great bands ).

I'll also nominate Sleepmakeswaves. I think they've disbanded now but they released some good music, third album can be freely downloaded on their old label's site IIRC.

Yndi Halda are worth a look too.

As are Rob Dougan's instrumental works. Matrix fans will recognise some of his stuff.

Ludovico Einaudi is worth your time for a more modern classical style.

I second that, seeing them in concert in a week or so, can't wait.

If you like some instrumental guitar, something with a little drive to it, check out Karma to Burn.
