The Walt Disney Studios and Paramount Pictures have reached a distribution and marketing agreement for the Indiana Jones franchise.

Under the arrangement, Disney gains distribution and marketing rights to future films, in addition to retaining the ownership rights it secured when it acquired Lucasfilm.

Paramount will continue to be responsible for distribution of the first four films in the franchise and will receive a financial participation on any future films that are produced and released. ..

Disney has not officially announced that a fifth “Indiana Jones” film is in the works. ..

Sources say that Steven Spielberg, who directed the previous films, would still be interested in helming future pics but, like with the other installments, a story would first need to be hashed out before Spielberg would ever commit. Insiders also added that while George Lucas has sold his stake in Lucasfilm to Disney, he still may have a part in developing the story like he and Spielberg had done in the past.

Kotaku: Disney Buys Indiana Jones

No Caption Provided

Last I remember, rumor was that the only way Harrison Ford agreed to even doing Star Wars: Episode VII, was that Disney had to commit to "looking into" another Indiana Jones movie. Next thing you know, Disney buys Indiana Jones..

Can't wait for the Chibi Indy Plush. Well..

Thoughts?

well, this makes sense considering Harrison Fords old man ranting about how he's refusing to act if they don't get his slippers on.

Much like what I said about Star wars.....can they do worse than what Lucas did with it?

From what I heard Spielberg had a shallow role in making crystal skull.

Please please please, if you have to make another movie don't cast Ford any more. He's just so old and grumpy! I wouldn't mind seeing a younger less experienced Indy ala Batman Begins. Just keep Sharia LaBeef or whatever away from it.

This is kind of just an update as we already know they own it.

Since Paramount has all kinds of rights to the original Indiana Jones all this does is answer a question I've been just randomly wondering about this past week. So that's weird timing.

They actually already did own Indiana Jones. The title is a bit misleading. They acquired the distribution and marketing rights for any future Indiana Jones movies.

It's basically like how Disney owns Spider-Man and the X-Men through its ownership of Marvel, but they can't make any movies based on those properties themselves, because those rights are currently held by Sony and Fox, respectively. Disney owned Star Wars and Indiana Jones through its ownership of Lucasfilm.

It's a bit more complex than that, since Sony and Fox would be making their Marvel-based movies with no input from Marvel or Disney, while Lucasfilm did make the Indiana Jones and Star Wars pictures.

People need to stop going to these movies because these classic franchises should remain just that, CLASSIC.

Enough Star Treks, Indys and Star Wars, they're only milking them and ruining their classic status! When people go to see them, they help perpetuate this pointless milking.

Those stories ended decades ago, why should they be revived? Just watch them again, the old ones!

This is like digging out Elvis Presley's rotting corpse and violating it with defibrillators trying to revive him to make more classics.

Disney sucks.

@jacktrote: Yeah, I'd be good if they never made another Indy thing, again. We already have Raiders and The Last Crusade. Nothings gonna recapture that, so why not just let the franchise rest, with some dignity.

Kinda thought they had this already but anything is a step up from the Lucas estate. That anyone thinks this franchise or Star Wars had any posterity left to ruin is baffling to me. You just hate successful companies, going through that mean teen streak and its cute and all. But Im looking forward to the next IJ suddenly.

"most of the time"

  • Oz the Great and Powerful (2013)
  • John Carter (2012)
  • The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010)
  • Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010)

I like their animation from Pixar and DAS, but their live action has been very hit and miss. More miss than hit.

Now I'm thinking about the possibility of an Indiana Jones/Captain America crossover movie and I'm not sure how I feel about that.

I figured they did already too. Whatever though, a new movie could be cool. It's not like they're taking the first three away from us.
