Poll Do you turn your computer off? (676 votes)

Yes 60%
No 40%

Do you actually turn your computer off each night or just put into sleep mode?

I don't think I've turned off the desktop in 2 years and I only turn off my laptop when I need to take it somewhere.

Shout out to the screensaver thread for making me think about this.

Yes, usually every night or when I'll be gone for more than a couple hours. Sometimes I'll let it run overnight or when I'm gone if I'm downloading a game or something.

Yes. If I leave the house for several hours I usually turn it off, as well as most times before I go to sleep unless I'm listening to a podcast.

My mother pretty much never turn off her laptop though, which kinda drives me nuts for some reason.

At night, yes. Not for any particular reason. Well... maybe a little bit of the OCD fear inflation is involved (I do have OCD). I think that if I leave things on overnight there will be a short and the apartment will burn down around me. That one is pretty far down the list of fears but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't there.

I used to turn it off until my desktop became so chunky that it became more viable to just put it in hibernation when I'm not using it. Of course, I'll turn it off every now and then to refresh everything since I notice that after a certain period of time some programs begin to fuck up and become impossible to use (Photoshop mainly).

Normally a BSOD after waking it up in the morning let's me know when I should shut it off.

I turn my laptop off when i remember to, otherwise i fall asleep and the blinking snooze light wakes me up. Seriously, that light is way, way too bright.

I use sleep mode or hybernate mode and I rarely turn my computer off except for when an update requires it.

I never turn off my laptop unless I need to take it with me somewhere. I suppose I should turn it off before I go to bed but I don't, I just close it and set it away.

Most of the time I fully turn it off or at least in a hibernate mode where it shuts it down and basically saves the desktop to the hdd. I really only keep it on during the day if I know I am going to be using it in the next couple of hours, otherwise it usually just gets shut off. Wastes too much power to how much I am gone and actually not using it.

@beachthunder: How do I see that? All I'm seeing is up time since I last woke it up from sleep

Edit: Never mind just remembered I restarted to apply an update.

I fall asleep watching my laptop every night, so its rare that I even put my computer to sleep. If I'm leaving for a while I'll turn it off sometimes, but normally it's on pretty much all day. At night after a few hours it sleeps itself, but it stays on a lot.

Sometimes, if my laptop starts to get all sluggish I'll turn it on for a few minutes. It usually starts to work better after that.

Or maybe I'm just imagining things and it's the same as before.

Mine only goes off when I leave for extended amounts of time. Otherwise it is always on. As I need to jump on and off at random times to do things for work. The only other time it gets a break is when it requires a reboot from an update.

Unless the power to the house goes out... nope never is off. I've actually heard its bad to do so because it can cause expansion and contraction of the circuitry due to the heat and then cooling off. Besides that I like not having to wait to do something. My up time right now is at 4 days+ and that is only because 4 days ago a fucking squirrel caused the transformer outside to short out causing the power to die along with the squirrel being hilariously electrocuted to death. Pro-tip electrocuted squirrel does not smell good at all.

I turn it off every night before bed. I have no reason to keep it on while I'm asleep. The only times I've left it on overnight are when I'm trying to download a large game. I don't have the greatest internet.

Like once a week.

I'm getting a new computer this week (building it), and I'll probably be more diligent about turning it off. Unless I'm downloading legal files, there's no point in keeping it on.

Yes, because I was informed by not doing so, I was damaging my computer, so I got worried.

I keep it on if I'm charging my phone/MP3 player overnight and I've lost the wall jack, or if I'm doing something, and I want to continue tomorrow. Or if I just fall asleep.

I used to be all sleep mode, all the time.

Then it started giving me blue screens. So now I shut it off when I go to sleep or am not gonna be using it for several hours.

My Windows desktop, yes (because the case has a bright blue blinky light on it when it is in sleep. If not for that I would just sleep it too). My Macbook, no. I do restart it once in a while but very seldom, usually only for updates.

The games PC yes. The working/"everthing else" MacBook seldom. I should do it more often. The beauty with SSDs are the boot times are really short now.

I am conscious about power usage and lifespan of hardware so yes I turn it off whenever it is not in use. Same with consoles and basically anything else in my house. With my laptop I often just close it and put it to sleep.

Since I have an 850w power supply, yeah. Also, that little green light on the motherboard keeps me up at night.

I guess if it was in another room that I didn't sleep in i'd keep it on. And with an SSD that system boots and is usable in like 30 seconds so it doesn't really matter.

As I said in the screen saver thread, I take a belt and braces approach.

I always take the safest route and switch off nearly all electrical appliances when they are not in use. Apart from potentially extending the life of the components, it's hard for the thing to overheat and catch fire if it's switched off.

I used to leave my PC on, but honestly there's no reason to other than if I'm downloading a huge file and wanna sleep through it or something. Also Windows 8 has this bug where if it wakes up from being in any mode of sleep or hybernation it will minimize any windows you open instantly, over and over, making the computer useless until you fully restart. Something to do with how it suspends states I think, I get these sorts of pc issues usually... cause they are impossible to actually diagnose, I have to just live with them forever. Same goes for that issue with keyboard language settings and 'sometimes' keys will switch to weird ones like an e with a dash above it... super annoying, and a known issue that hasn't been fixed in over a FUCKING DECADE!!!!

Windows man.... has these dang issues that they deny exist and never fix :(

If I'm out for long periods of time. I mean it usually just sleeps when it's not in use, my tower pulsating with a yellow to orange to red, comforting me at all times and simulating warmth and compassion....

No, it goes into sleep mode when I'm not using it. The only time it is turned off is when I don't catch one of those Windows updates that starts a timer to automatically restart your computer. The amount of power the computer uses in sleep mode is negligible.

My school/work computer always stays on even if I'm not at school/work! That's because I SSH into it at home and stuff and use it as a server for other stuff.

My laptop stays on because it is the best alarm for me in the morning in that I actually have to physically get up to stop it unlike my phone. Otherwise I turn it off when I'm done with it because it has an SSD and boots so smooth.

My desktop does indeed get shut off every night and every time I'm done with it usually.
