I have been playing drums since I was a wee lad and was wondering, who influenced you. Now I don't want to hear any great like Ginger Baker or Neil Peart, but drummers from the late 80's early 90's. Matt Cameron from Soundgarden had a big influence on me when I was younger and Derek Grant from The Suicide Machines showed me you could be super technical while playing punk. Also Canadian drummer Great Bob Scott of Look People is fucking amazing...check him out on youtube if you get the chance.
Drummers who influenced you?
Ben Gillies from Silverchair influenced me, mainly out of sheer spite, when I was younger. While he wasn't amazing on Frogstomp, he was pretty damn good for being, what, 15?
There's so many to name. I was never really into searching for the world's greatest drummers, I either stumbled on them or they were in bands I liked and did things that interested me. Some are good, some are bad, but they all had some level of impact on me at one point of my life.
The short list of people old and new who have inspired me (forgetting many I'm sure) :
Lars Ulrich (Metallica)
Tommy Lee (Motley Crew)
John Bonham (Led Zepplin)
RJ Herrero (Suicidal Tendencies)
Mike Bordin (Faith No More)
Matt Cameron (Soundgarden)
Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters)
Ringo Starr (The Beatles)
Joey Kramer (Aerosmith)
Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix)
Buddy Rich
Neal Peart (RUSH)
Jimmy Chamberlain (The Smashing Pumpkins)
Max Weinberg (Bruce Springstein, Conan O'Brian)
Travis Barker (Blink 182)
Matt Sorum (The Cult, Guns n Roses)
Rick Allen (Def Leppard)
Matt Helders (The Arctic Monkeys)
I used to be poor until I was turned on to the 'Genius of Ayn Rand' by Neil Peart of Rush. Now I realize that greed is the motive force of the world and also appreciate 7/8 time. Thanks, Neil Peart!
...Seriously, though, Neil Peart is way cooler than Objectivism
Does Rockband count?
I was never much of a set drummer, so I really only know of the greats. Any skills I have have been from drum corps (Go Govies!) and all that other fun band nerd stuff.
The Rev (Jimmy Sullivan), Joey Jordison, definitely Justin Beiber. Matt Cameron is great, Spoonman is a blast to play.
Mike Portney is pretty awesome too, it's quite funny how I don't listen to this kind of Music as much anymore (it's more deadmau5, Prodigy stuff ATM), John Dolmayan.
Hmm... First drummers that come to mind is Bobby Jarzombeck, Morgan Aagren and Terry Bozzio. These guys didn't really influence me in the beginning, but these are drummer I've grown very fond of over the years. I can't really remember which drummers I was most "into" when I first picked up the drum sticks though.
Gary Young because he pointed a gun at Stephen Malkmus (not that I don't like him) and handed out Cinnamon Toast and Cabbage to the audience during concerts.
Jimmy Chamberlain..the guys a beast
Also Chad Sexton from 311 is pretty rad.
Glad someone mentioned Jon Otto. Great drummer.
Jon Karel
Danny Carey
Aaron Gillespie
Daniel Williams of The Devil Wears Prada
ANDREW FORSMAN OF THE FALL OF TROY.
