United Kingdom at 10 points?

Seriously? Wow. =P

I didn't watch it so I don't have any opinions. Are all songs sung in a certain language?

Indeed. I never even heard the song. I stopped listening to mainstream pop a long time ago, after cellphone ringtones started to lead the german charts.

Having done European Studies as a major, I was subjected to Eurovision to some degree. It just seemed like the same crappy pop but with more bizarre outfits and slight regional variations. And not that I want to make any negative generalisations about the Germans or their taste in pop music, but didn't David Hasselhoff top the charts there at one point?  I'm surprised they won :P

I am from the United Kingdom and I am extremely embarassed about this result. Not only was our song extremely camp and rubbish. All of the voting is biased as certain countries always vote for each other.

I am from Ireland.  We have won the Eurovision song contest seven times, the most any country has ever won.  We won three consecutive years from '92 to '94.  I liked our song this year, but unfortunately very few others did though.

Anyway, at least we beat the UK!  Take that eight hundred years of oppression!

UK could bring out the Beatles and still lose.  It's not that we are hated, it's just that nobody likes us.  If America was in the competition we would (hopefully) count on their vote.

Not defending the credibility of the voting, but UK's songs are usually crappy even by eurovision standarts

Also i really think they should pull the plug on Eurovision now - it's become nothing more than political point scoring and back scratching - and makes countries basically behave like the school geeks finger banging the hot cheerleaders behind the bicycle sheds in the playground in return for next days test results.
For something that's supposed to be about musical expression and exposure to the diversity of other cultures and all in all , a bit of fun , it's turned into 'Everyone vote down UK, everyone vote up whoever is letting us take oil, land, and neighbouring countries'

That and the music has fucking sucked for a long, put a bullet into this dying steed and use the money usually wasted on it for something, worthwhile?!

This thread is proudly sponsored by the Eurovision song contest.
Poor kid who did the UK song. It was an awful song, but he didn't deserve to be last.
Lack of exploding drums/Dancers on fire really set them back though

So for those who don't know the voting is all political and I do find it pretty funny that the contest always seems to inspire more political questions in me than it does musical ones. The slightly worrying thing is that while the UK doesn't take the contest too seriously the rest of Europe does seem to, although to a certain extent I'm sure that ties back into the political side of things. I think the contest has certainly told us over the years how much Europe seems to dislike the UK, even the year Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the UK song we got completely thrashed. I did enjoy the year Lordi won, partly because in such a pop-dominated contest there was this ridiculous metal band playing a song called 'Hard Rock Hallelujah' to all of Europe. In general there's almost no Eurovision music I've enjoyed, it's pretty much all cheesy, generic Europop although from what I can tell the music scene in mainland Europe is very detached from that of the US and UK music scene. Of course, there are always one or two crazy entries that you can't help but smile at...

ALL countries are biased. Everyone gives votes for their neighbors, everyone! People make it sound like only eastern Europe does it, i recommend to check how western Europe votes. Everyone is biased plus on top of all ALL song are crap, at best there are couple of mediocre ones. Next day everyone moves on and doesnt speak or listen any of Eurovision songs. It just there to make a lot of money for some people AND to make it seem for couple of days as if those songs from different parts of Europe matter.  If you have never watched it, i recommend you do at least once, its hillarious.A lot of singers sing in bad English and think they are amazing lol. Comedy. BTW i also agree that they should pull plug on this nonsense, but they never will.

I didn't even watch it, I saw Scarface on Showtime instead. Which is funny, since I live in the city that ESC was hosted in. I have however heard the Norwegian song about a million times and felt the need to kick the singer every time.

Good thing we(Norway) didn't win again. I think there's a conspiracy going on though, since Keep of Kalessin got outclassed by that soapboy that represented us this year. I mean just listen to how awesome they are:

@OutOfBounds9000: What? It was just about the only song that was bearable. The german girl had an accent that hugely annoyed me. And almost all the rest were crappy euro-pop stuff that would die in the US or UK.

@Azteck: I think it is hilarious.  Sometimes, it is easy to tell that it was during some board room that the nonsense sort of stage direction was decided.

I like to think the UK fails on purpose. Hosting Eurovision along with a recession and the 2012 Olympics is pretty damn pointless.
I like to think that. Then again, I shouldn't be surprised at how pathetic modern music is. God this is depressing. I need the Russian entry and some hard liquor right now.

Haha, you guys should check out Lithuania's song. It was a real pity that they didn't make it to the final, as they had a brilliant song. I honestly hated the Swedish song (yet again; "fel låt vann" bahaha). I watched Melodifestivalen this year and thought (along with a ton of my friends) that the Salem al Fakir song should have been sent to the final.
