I like to think I'm some-what quick witted but I litterally only just got that Miles "Tails" Prower was a pun for "Miles Per Hour". Then checked the wiki to confirm and sure enough I was 15 years late to the party.
Anyone else missed a joke/pun only to have it sneak up on them way later?
I never got it, but I got used to his name when I was still too young to get the joke (I could hardly speak English back then).
Also, the fact that his last name in Japanese (パウアー ) sounds even less like "per hour" (it's pronunciation is closer to "Power") probably created a sort of mental block for me later on. I mean, if Yasushi Yamaguchi wanted to make a pun on "per hour", you'd think he could have made it a tad more obvious.
I do. I did the same with Pokémon. I had never seen the cartoon and didn't own a handheld at the time to play the games, but the franchise is so big that you couldn't (and still can't) miss it. One day, I saw an ad and I suddenly realised: "Pokémon.... POKEt MONsters?!" I have to admit I felt really clever for a few minutes... Then realised how slow I had been and felt slightly ashamed.
Several years ago, I was astonished when I discovered that the name Mewtwo was a "two" added to "Mew" to represent its clone. I don't know if it's because I hadn't seen the name in writing enough or what, but I was a stupid child.

@Skullomania: and i never got that tails pun until you just explained it to me via this forum, not life changing, but reminded me of my biggest "welcome to the rest of the world, thanks for joining us!" moment, back in Gr.8 when i discovered what "mofo" stood for. man i thought i was ahead of the game with that one...but i could NOT have been further behind if i tried to

oh before i discovered its true meaning i didn't really think about what it meant, thought it was just an odd word somebody made up somewhere to call people. so naturally, i assumed others didn't know its true meaning either... that was an embarrassing lunch hour

No I think the nickname stays "Tails" since his first name is literally Miles any way otherwise even Sonic has been saying it wrong. Not that Sonic's been doing anything right latley either.
