Essentially I just want a new game to play that has a heavy and really good story. Good examples are Transistor, Bastion, Journey, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, and Spec Ops: The Line.
Game Recommendations
Let's see. The Soul Reaver series has a pretty excellent--and extremely well-written--story, but it takes playing most of the games to get the most out of it. Fragile Dreams on the Wii has a story that is maybe a little flat but is extremely dark in tone and atmosphere--highly recommended, in my book. Gone Home isn't heavy or complex, but the story and characters are shockingly human and grounded in reality. Plus, I think it's really sweet. Also, Persona 3's story does go to some dark places, but it takes hours and hours to get to that point.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
Off the top of my head:
- Heavy Rain
- inFamous 2
- Resistance 3
- Alan Wake
- The Last of Us
- The Wonderful 101 (not heavy but still a really great story)
The Witcher comes to mind. That and Planescape: Torment have the heaviest video game stories I know.
- The Witcher 2
- Valiant Hearts
- Deus Ex: Human Revolution
- Mafia (if you can find it)
- The Walking Dead (telltale)
- Limbo
- Gears of War 1,2,3
- the Bioshock games (1 and infinite imho)
Limbo and Telltale's The Walking Dead are pretty great, and some what similar to the games you mentioned.
the xenosaga series has an entrancing and huge focus on its story, the long and detailed cutscenes can become annoying, but if youre in it for the story, than that should be motivating if anything
This person gets it!
I might say Indigo Prophecy, but it suffers from David Cage syndrome. Masterful setup, complete batshit stupid as fuck ending. But man, the early half of it is really strong.
I'm also really enjoying the Wolf Among Us. The thematic elements are a little more adult and subtle than the Walking Dead's.
