Hello friends,

So, I've decided to delve into the world of UK Garage, or really, just garage in general. For those that don't know, Garage is a 90's offshoot of house using syncopated rhythms and...stuff. It worked out great when I got into 90's Drum and Bass, so hopefully, this expired genre will have as many hidden treasures. So far I've only heard the EP Club Trax Vol. 1 by R.I.P. Productions, which I'm digging.

Still, I have no real idea of where to start. If there are any duders or dudettes well versed in Garage, any recommendations of artists, tunes or albums within the genre would be appreciated. I'm down with both 4x4 Garage and 2-step Garage.

Have a good day!

As a Brit who was quite into U.K garage (very casually however) in the late 90's, here's a selection of my favourite tracks. Garage/House was absolutely huge towards the end of the decade but quickly dropped off in favour of hip-hop/rap and was dead in the water by 2002/03.

This is probably as main-stream a list as you can get, i'm afraid, but hopefully it will help you on your U.K garage quest.

@Gizmo: Yes! Gimme those funky midnight grooves, cheers.

EDIT: Man, some of those are proper cheesy, but in a great way. I'd only heard instrumental stuff with short vocal samples, but damn.

I don't know a huge amount about it myself, but this was probably one of the tracks that made garage a thing (thanks Alex Navarro). I mean noticed by mainstream media.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-m50ArrPjNw

The photo in the vid is of Craig David, who was a session vocalist for that track for the Artful Dodger. Hopefully a few google searches on the Artful Dodger will help you more.

I'm from Norway. I started digging deep dubstep of the DMZ variety, as well as Burial, so I started investigating where that came from. First, I got into jungle and oldskool DNB, some fantastic music there, especially the stuff on Metalheadz. Now, I want to get into Garage.

@solidlife: Cheers, though I'm not really having trouble finding jungle. Brown paper bag is a fucking tune!

@Harkat: no problem, its been fun to go back on memory lane tonight just makes me upset how rubbish current music is here in the UK, when we actually had a genuine good scene which died out in the 2000s

Im signing out with this last one as i got an early start but i hope this thread has helped and may it grow lol

Garage is not dead mate. Garage is not dead.

I guess I'm into some of the more cheesier things. But this was one of the biggest tracks of last year and its pure garage bliss:

And now for the cheese:

^^That was the breakout hit for the genre Bassline aka Niche or Scouse House, which is basically an offshoot of the 4x4 speed garage that revolved around that bouncy bass sound. Pretty shortlived genre because it was basically all centred around a club called Niche in Liverpool that was shut down.

As for UKG stuff, I do really love it, in its original incarnations as 2step and speed garage, as well as the faster reinventions of it in the past few years.

This is my ultimate favourite Garage track though:

Absolute banger, get a decent set of speakers with good bass, wait for that rolling bassline to kick in and just bliss out.

Other classics, for me:

I've been trying to find this last one for absolutely years. The original isn't all that hard to find but this particular remix, forget about it.

and a couple of more recent "future garage" joints

That shit was huge in Dallas, TX. We called it 2-Step though, a sub-genre I guess...

Good song, and good advice ta boot.

@LD50:2step is just a name to differentiate that syncopated sound with speed garage, which was all four to the floor. Speed Garage was never as huge as 2step though, and all of the breakout artists were making 2step, so UKG basically became synonymous with 2step I think.

Blummin eck, how come so many people are just posting commercial stuff. In my opinion Wookie is the one! Whether his own productions, or with Exemen. The dude smashes it everytime. This is the Exemen remix of Yesterday by Debelah Morgan.
