Giantbomb does ads correctly. Other sites don't.

#1 Posted by sleepykyle (26 posts) - 1 year, 22 days ago

I went to the Escapist today and this happened. My entire browsing window was nearly covered with ads. I decided to take on the challenge of calculating approximately how much of my screen was occupied by these ads:

Total Screen Space = 871,760 sq. pixels (I used MS paint to get pixel dimensions, all dimensions are in sq. pixels.)

AD 1 = 55,111

Video AD = 238,005 (I know this one may not actually be fair to count, but w/e)

AD 2 = 73,953

AD 3 = 105,165

AD 4 = 154,230

Total Ad Area = 626,464 sq. pixels

At the time of this screenshot, approximately 72% of my browser was covered in ads. Insanity.

I know that I am not in the "publisher's club" or whatever they like to call the paid membership, but this is just stupid. I should want to pay for membership to a website as a way to support the content of the website, or some other added bonus. I shouldn't have to be badgered with ads in order to enjoy the content that you have decided to offer for free.

Your Pixels shouldn't be square. They are taller then they are wide.

Also, I agree.

I know this is a dick answer, but dude, just use adblock. Also I just checked GB with adblock off and signed out and the ads are pretty terrible still, but there's less of them than that screen for sure.

there are ads on giantbomb?

#5 Posted by BabyChooChoo (3579 posts) - 1 year, 22 days ago

You obviously were not around for the Dead Island ads...

lol, well, okay that was just one shitty example on an otherwise spotless record, but damn...those ads were fucking annoying

I don't claim to be an expert, but I was under the impression that pixels on 720p and 1080i displays were in fact square, which would mean your statement only gets more wrong every day... Just saying...

The bigger problem here is that you don't have the taskbar auto hide when you're not using it. You deserve all the ads your processor can fucking handle before it melts in agony for that shit.

The escapist if pretty bad for ads. No, I don\t want to watch Space Janitors, thank you.

#12 Posted by MideonNViscera (1785 posts) - 1 year, 22 days ago

Ads still exist? I figured their value would be zero now that we all have AdBlock haha NoScript is sweet too.

I dunno how people who don't use adblock tolerate using the internet.

If you don't use AdBlock in this day and age, you're doing it wrong.

Yup, supporting the sites I enjoy visiting, I'm definitely doing it wrong.

#17 Posted by Sooty (6695 posts) - 1 year, 22 days ago

I saw an ad on Giant Bomb for "road kill t-shirts" which had a huge patch of blood on a shirt which then said "I'm fine" on it.

Classy stuff. I only see ads when on my iPad luckily.

White list the sites you like?

I use to frequent the Escapist. I had nigh on 5000 posts when I got banned for too short a posts. At the time, there was a large influx of new members who, er, couldn't properly say much. That coupled with the insane ads already had me thinking of dropping the site altogether when the ban pushed me out almost permanently.

I still visit for Zero Punctuation but the load times there are insane. Seriously, try loading up their home page and GiantBomb's simultaneously. Go ahead. Do it. It's like watching a marathon runner race a two-legged turtle.

Exactly. Takes like, two clicks to whitelist a site. Support the sites you want to support, block all the other trash.

#22 Posted by NegativeCero (2494 posts) - 1 year, 22 days ago

I feel like I remember someone on staff saying there will be site skins, so look forward to that, I guess.

Fine I caved and got this crap. I visit maybe 1 site a week that I won't have whitelisted, so it really won't make any difference.

I use adblock and even when I could see ads, I never clicked on them.  Besides, there is a lot of malware from ads now so its more of a security thing these days.

#26 Posted by BestUsernameEver (4648 posts) - 1 year, 22 days ago

theverge.com does ads very tastfully, one big reason I keep going there, it's hard tech news and very little ads.

#27 Posted by BaneFireLord (2275 posts) - 1 year, 22 days ago

Maybe you should try out Adblock.

I forget that ads are online to be honest. The first thing I do when I install windows is download my browser of choice at that time and an adblocker. Adblocker might as well come pre-installed in the dam things.

#33 Posted by thebipsnbeeps (479 posts) - 1 year, 22 days ago

If Giantbomb never have ads to the scale of that Prototype 2 one, then they'll always do ads correctly.

#34 Posted by Aronman789 (2610 posts) - 1 year, 22 days ago

@BestUsernameEver: Their On The Verge show is pretty good too, though they haven't had one this month yet, guess it's a bit hard to follow up after Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

I think that's old info because as soon as I got my monthy sub I stopped seeing ads anyway. I think they just haven't updated that page in a long time.

I used to run AdBlock but some extention in Chrome was sucking up 80% of my RAM and I ended up deleating all my extentions. I only go to a few sites anyway so I have little reason to run ad blockers.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/ I think does advertising the best out of any website. The ads reskin the site while still making it look presentable. The ads are always PC games so it fits in with the audience and the images actually look good. Most ads I see are badly compressed or a super low resolution and end up looking terrible. For instance, I am never interested in any product advertised on YouTube because they are in 360p. At least bump it to 720p so it looks decent on my 1600x900 screen.

Advertisement fills the empty spots while keeping the content viable.

GiantBomb the site that never turned a profit did ads right? ...lol C'Mon SON.

#42 Posted by BestUsernameEver (4648 posts) - 1 year, 22 days ago

@Aronman789: The new episode is going up today actually. I like it, but it get's extremely awkward sometimes, and Paul Miller actually thinks he's funny when he makes off set videos for the show, But overall it's pretty good.

Adblock dude, for real. Shit's miraculous.

#44 Edited by Bocam (3137 posts) - 1 year, 21 days ago

Adblock doesn't work with the Escapist as it makes the site unable to load.

Edit: Now it does

I enjoy threads that scientifically indicate how fucked up things are...good thread! I wouldn't say the ads that giantbomb uses are good yet though.

I've never used Adblock. I know there are ads, but I never care because I don't pay attention to them.
