Can anyone name any good horror movies?Im pretty sure I've seen everything from 2011-2013 though
Good horror movies?
I really like Noroi, but it's a slow building atmospheric Japanese horror film. Not for everyone. But I think those that enjoy that type of movie will REALLY like it.
@flameboy298: Creepshow - Great goofy horror. It's themed as film versions of a pulp horror comic, so it uses lots of interesting comic elements like weird panels in some shots and extreme colored lighting. Definitely a must see.
Trick r Treat - A wonderful homage to all things Halloween, it's a horror anthology with 5 (I think) stories all happening in one town on the night (and interweaving in clever ways. Not too scary, but definitely creepy and a good time overall.
Dead Alive - Slapstick zombie awesomeness. It's almost more Loony Tunes than horror per se, but it turns into one of the best hilarious gore fests ever put on film. I think it might still hold the record for pure amount of fake blood used in a movie. (also, it's Peter Jackson, so you can see the strange shit that the eventual Lord of the Lord of the Rings got up to in his younger days)
enjoy!
@joshwent: yeah I liked trick r treat, so dead alive? Isnt that based on a game or is it the other way around
@flameboy298: Hmm. Not sure what you're thinking of. House of the Dead? DOA: Dead or Alive? Don't watch those!
It's this one. (called Braindead in some regions)
The Cabin in the Woods is the best one I've seen recently.
Also, if you've only watched 2011-2013 horror movies, you've really missed out on the best of the the bunch: The Thing, The Shining, The Exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street, Jaws, Alien...

A quick note on Dead Alive - it's called "Braindead" everywhere other than the US. (EDIT: Sorry, I didn't see you note that in a later post.)
Alien. Done.
The Thing. DONE.
I was going to say these, but they seem like inaugural viewing for any beginning horror fan. I guess they should be mentioned just in case you haven't seen them.
Also The Shining, I guess, which I haven't seen because I'm not a horror fan but I read half the book once so I should go watch it one of these days.
@apparatus_unearth: I liked Insidious, Sinister, V/H/S, Hostel, Frontiers,The Collector I hated the movie The human centipede
Rosemary's Baby. Slow build and you could categorize it as more of a thriller, but still a fantastic film.
I want to mention more stuff that isn't as obvious as The Shining or The Thing or Rosemary's Baby, since you should and probably have seen those already. You're Next just released, I enjoyed that. I watched Absentia on Netflix a while ago and thought it was actually pretty neat.
American Werewolf in London is a classic with some great practical effects on the transformation that reminds me of The Thing.
Also, looking through my dvds, I want to mention Repulsion. Another Polanski thriller that I really loved.
@sinusoidal: Seen all of those, Loved the shinning.Cabin in the woods was good at the time...If you guys mean Alien is that sorta like Alien vs Predator? Not sure whats scary about them lol

*tires screeching* *terrible crash*
We mean Alien. The original 1979 movie. Not its direct sequels (Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien Resurrection), none of which are really scary (though Aliens is one of the best sci-fi movies ever made, so watch it too), we mean Alien. It's a horror classic that, like many horror classics, got more and more cheesy and action-y over time and now aren't scary at all. But the original Alien is still virtually required viewing if you like horror.
EDIT: For the record, Alien vs Predator is a crossover franchise with the Predator movies, which you should also watch but not because they're horror movies.
If you guys mean Alien is that sorta like Alien vs Predator? Not sure whats scary about them lol
- Friday the 13th Part 1-3 (original)
- A Nightmare on Elm Street parts 1-2 (original)
- Halloween part 1-2
- Freddy vs Jason
- The Dawn of the Dead remake with Ving Raymes was pretty awesome - I'd be willing to say the best "Romero style" zombie movie in the last 20 years.
- The Thing (original)
- The Exorcist
- The Crazies (both the original and the remake)
- REC and REC 2 (also the US remake Quarantine) are great
- P2
- Ringu (the original Japanese version of The Ring)
- The Blair Witch Project

You're a younger guy, aren't you? Early-mid teens?
Watch Alien. The original.
@nightriff: The Thing is always the right answer.

Wha...wha...whaaaaat?
Again, Alien. Then The Thing. Return and report. Thank you.
I actually just watched(not for the first time)The thing a few hours ago, so I'm going to reinforce the recommendation of that. Also, The Shining, Halloween, Alien(absolutely nothing like Alien vs. Predator)and Texas Chainsaw massacre are pretty great.
Jacob's Ladder is on netflix now. It was part of the inspiration for Silent Hill and the parallels are pretty evident.
Thanks for spreading the word about Jacob's Ladder! I haven't seen it.

One of my favorite films regardless of genre. Fantastic flick.

I know that people younger then me have to exist, but... I just wasn't ready for a statement like that, it's like not knowing what... not knowing what.... not knowing what Alien is god damnit.
Anyways, I recommend In the Mouth of Madness.
@stonyman65:You mean John Carpenter's The Thing(1982),right? That film is actually a remake of The Thing from Another World(1951), which, side note, is the black and white horror movie that is being watched by the kids in the original Halloween(1978).
If you guys mean Alien is that sorta like Alien vs Predator? Not sure whats scary about them lol
This might be my favorite response to anything ever.
@apparatus_unearth: I liked Insidious, Sinister, V/H/S, Hostel, Frontiers,The Collector I hated the movie The human centipede
Check out The Conjuring if you haven't, same director as Insidious.
Creepshow is perfection, just that poster alone is everything I love about the genre.
Susperia, just beautiful colors
Reanimator, more colors
Return of the Living dead, running zombies in the 80s, punk rock music, random acts of nudity, characters that are more then just their costumes "this isn't a costume it's a way of life"
Slither, modern horror done right with goofy ass zombie deer fights in the dark.
Cruse of Frankenstein, remakes are part of this genre, see it done right, especially how influential Bride of Frankentstein is they went into a radically different direction
Bride of Frankenstein, this film will make you go "OOOOOOOH NOW I UNDERSTAND EVERY FILM TROPE" This is basically the citizen kane or Wizard of Oz of horror genre
Young Frankenstein, why not.
@flameboy298: I would add to the already mentioned films...
- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre(1974)
- Hellraiser(1987), and Hellbound:Hellraiser 2(1988)
- Re-Animator(1985)
- The Evil Dead(1981), Evil Dead 2(1987), and Army of Darkness(1992)
- The Return of the Living Dead(1985)
- Pet Sematary(1989)
....and drop everything and watch Alien(1979), and John Carpenter's The Thing(1982)..... they are mentioned multiple times in this thread for a reason. They are 2 of the best ever....go...watch them...ASAP...

I saw Hellraiser and the original is the best after that all the sequels seem like they were just made to get as much money as possible,I saw the evil dead remake and I hope it isn't as bad the original because I thought it was horrible.

Great movie.with a great story, but it wasn't scary at all.

Blair Witch Project was just lame...nothing even happens it was below average for me,Loved the Rec films Rec4 is supposed to come out this year.I like The Exorcist 1 but the sequel was just fucking horrible
Thanks Guys I'll take a look at those movies. The Ring?Tell me you dont mean Lord of The Rings...

Sorry to keep ragging on ya, haha. Nobody' born with movie knowledge, after all. But maaaan, some of these posts are stabbing me right in my horror-loving heart. :P If the question "Is Nightmare on Elm Street that movie with Jackie Earl Haley?" ever asked (not by you, but by anybody ever) I may actually cry in real life.
- Martyrs
- The Children
- 28 Days Later
- Funny Games (US) (have not seen the original...)

Martyrs...shit, I'm scared to even watch that film, I have it and have heard a lot about it.....but I'm not sure I'm ready.
Be a man/woman. You'll never be ready so might as well watch it now.

It just sounds like "I spit on your grave" Not sure if you've watched that film or not

It's more of a thriller/horror I think? I know many people consider this a thriller, but I find the things that happen pretty much horror.
I don't remember if there is some comedy in it, but it certainly isn't like Tucker & Dale vs Evil or Cabin in the Woods.
Dawn of The Dead (remake and original), The Cabin in The Woods, Alien, and if you liked V/H/S then check out You're Next, I haven't seen it but it seems like a pretty decent horror movie (plus, it totally reminds me of Hotline Miami)
Alien and The Thing are the only horror movies you need. There are some other solid ones like Halloween and the exorcist but the other top are cream of the crop.
No I haven't seen that, and I dont' think I want to either. I can't un-see fucked up stuff, shit burns forever in my mind.....and I don't wanna carry that around. I got enough baggage lol
Night of the Living Dead - yes the black and white one. I watched it in college and it still scared the crap out of me.
Dawn of the Dead - The original is considered a zombie classic, maybe THE zombie classic, but I really like the remake a lot more than I thought I would. I think in this instance I would say the remake might be a bit more accessible, since it's newer. It's a good film in it's own right, though. Don't let "remake" scare you away. I see this one was already mentioned, but I like it enough to mention it again.
Nosferatu - I am being entirely serious. Yes it's super old, yes it's silent, but god is it creepy. It also gives you a good look at just how far vampire fiction has come, from the freakish and disgusting Count Orlok to the sparkly, sexy vampires of today. I watched this alone in the middle of the day and some portions of it really stuck with me. Just give it a try.
Candyman - I remember watching this when it first came out on VHS. Though the title is kind of bland, the movie was pretty outstanding. It's also based on a Clive Barker short story, and that's a pretty good pedigree if you're looking for horror.
Alien and The Thing are both brilliant and must see, so follow everyone's advice and watch those first!
Rosemary's Baby. Slow build and you could categorize it as more of a thriller, but still a fantastic film.

American Werewolf in London is a classic with some great practical effects on the transformation that reminds me of The Thing.
Also, looking through my dvds, I want to mention Repulsion. Another Polanski thriller that I really loved.
Rosemary's Baby is great. I'd also recommend The Tenant, which like Repulsion and Rosemary's Baby is part of Polanski's "Apartment" trilogy. Event Horizon, Alien, The Thing, Jacob's Ladder, The Shining and the Romero zombie classics have all been mentioned, so I think I'm pretty satisfied. Maybe add Cronenberg's The Brood ... but that movie may be a bit too fucked up and weird (and maybe aged) for someone just getting started in the genre.
Along with the previously mentioned The Ring, I'd recommend the Japanese original version of Dark Water. The American remake was kinda alright, but the original was so much more effective in just about every way. If you want to really dig down that hole, there have been several movies based on the Ring novel - the 1999 South Korean version was pretty good too, though in general the Japanese version is the best, but the South Korean version did some scenes extremely well.
Jacob's Ladder is one that I've only recently come around to, and since everyone's already taken care of Alien and The Thing (which are probably my two favorite horror movies as well, so good on you internet) I seriously want to recommend this movie. I guess it's more of a "psychological thriller" but that blurs the line of good horror anyways. Tim Robbins does a phenomenal job.
