Lightly toasted, with butter or cream cheese on it. Sourdough toast is the best, followed by whole grain wheat, then Hawaiian, then white, then all the rest.
If I'm just eating toast, I need some good jam on that shit. If it's with an omlette or something, I like it dry - I use that shit like a utensil when I go out for breakfast. Good for moppin' up eggs/hot sauce/etc.
It depends what I'm having with it. If I'm having Jam or Marmalade on it, It should be slightly done. So it's still crispy, but isn't developing much of a brown colour yet. Toasted sandwiches should be golden brown. A nice golden brown cheese toastie is delicious. With a soft boiled egg (i.e. eggy soldiers) it should golden brown too. If I'm having baked beans on toast, it should be charred. All that bean juice soaks into the charred toast and tastes lovely.
@Sinatra: I've had peanut butter, but i prefer it untoasted far and away. I just don't like the rough dry texture of toast. I don't mind dipping it either i guess.
I don't eat toast anymore because the only margarine people buy around my house is some Wal-Mart shit that literally turns your toast to liquid as soon as it makes contact with the bread. Gotta love biting into toast only to have it feel like some one dunked it into a cup of water first.
