Huh. The implication of your post is that you’re thinking about returning to NeoGAF because ResetEra is already having problems. I wonder how many other people are working through the same thought process right now.

Having looked at both I'm going to guess not a lot.

ResetEra is great so far and I've seen zero problems, while GAF has 'stabilized' in the same way someone falling from a 6 floor building landing onto concrete technically isn't getting worse any more. The users that made 90% of the content all moved over, and the only people left are basically lurkers, in denial, or actively support shitty behaviour.

That's a bit extreme, there's more than enough people still around that just want to talk videogames, I'm hanging around for the time being because I can still talk about stuff I like, had no problems so far. Still, that might change and I'll see how things turn out. Does RE have differnt themes? Because that white layout is very hard on the eyes.

@chaser324:GAF had a blacklist, but the mods would also manually check the domains of every email address for new accounts, which is why account approval usually took months. I got rejected 1-2 months or so after I signed up.

@ravelle: I'm not really seeing all these problematic posts on Era, can you link to any examples? And while I haven't spent much time on GAF lately, it seems much less active than Era. You can literally compare equivalent threads where Era has 2-3x the number of replies. And the posters I considered notable and especially interesting on GAF seem largely to have abandoned it, either going to Era or just disappearing.

Oh I'm not saying there are, it's just a concern I have because the people that left were being dramatic about it making suicide posts on GAF with offensive material begging for a ban and such.

@ravelle: Those account suicide posts are likely not indicative of their typical posting behavior, and if it is, they'll likely get quickly banned no matter where they go.

Also it's something that's hard to verify now, but it would be interesting to see how many of the truly repugnant suicide posts were made by people who had made worthwhile contributions to GAF in the past. There were certainly plenty people with a grudge against the GAF/Era community that kept "sacrificial" accounts on the side, waiting for a chance to disrupt and discredit it.

Wow someone on gaf crunched the numbers on Resetera vs Neogaf

in my head I figured it was this kind of disparity, but this kind of shift in activity is astounding

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1456455

If you don't want to click, essentially there are roughly on average new 10-20 posts made on Resetera for every 1 made on Neogaf. At many intervals there has been more new members admitted to Resetera than posts made at Neogaf in the same time bracket.

@slag: And here's an archive of that for when GAF's one moderator gets around to deleting that post. https://archive.is/Oz5pt

It makes you wonder what could have been if EL had taken a far different approach and been apologetic and projected some humility. Yes the split etc still happens and there is a big loss but GAF itself might be in a slightly better situation. Stepping down would have definitely been a big move that saved people.

I don't 100% know why all the mods left outside of speculations but it would probably make some of them stay if he had made a proper/better statement without that long period of down time, and users would probably stay with them. He did something similar with Amir0x, his history contributed to why people are questioning him, like I don't think he's like a rapist or something but at this point I have no reason to defend the guy, and I just don't care about him, I go with the rest of the community that makes gaf, he's a single person, I don't even recall talking to the guy, like ever... I know people who got banned (account deleted) just because they questioned/criticized him, I didn't find out until I see that person's account became "guest" and no longer exist.

People just recall him being a terrible person to his members, he just doesn't learn, people just moved on with the rest of the community.

At this point it doesn't even matter if what he did was true or not, his behavior after it all pretty much ruined everything.

No kidding, to both of ya'll. After hearing Patrick talk about his interview with the woman involved (how it happened and especially how they both handled it afterwards) it probably would have been salvagable if not for his attitude in the aftermath.

*To be clear, I still think what he he did with the initial incident is gross, disgusting, and unacceptable.

I'm on ResetEra! Feels good to finally be on there. Having said that Giant Bomb's forums have been awesome so I'm definitely planning to hop back and forth.

I might jump over to Reset after all, NeoGAF becomes more silent by the day it seems, my subbed threads remain gray. ;(

I just need to find a way to get a valid e-mail address for it.

@mirby-kun: it most likely means the email service is banned. So you can't sign up with a gmail or hotmail account for example. They want you to use either a domain you paid for or a work/school email address. That's also how it was with gaf.

Is there a good reason why Reset Era is not calling itself NeoNeoGaf? Because that is the kind of dumb I'd subscribe to.

@slag: it should not matter how exceedingly rare something is: the justice system should never take this into account.

Guilt by unrelated association is completely unfair. If a liberal, feminist mod is accused of a traffic violation you won’t bring a former co-worker or enployee’s Ties to child porn I to it will you? Why would you into this guy? Do you assume anyone who was i vved in Subway commercials a few years ago potentially guilty?

I don’t mean to be harsh but that all seems pretty circumstantial. I stand up for these rights because in the past they have been abused to take down minorities and innocents. We shouldn’t accept that becoming mor normal just to support our own biases in my opinion,

And for what it is worth in my experience it is MORE common than genuine claims, although I don’t expect the real world to necessarily reflect that.
