The Question of the Day for today is:

Do you have an absolute FAVORITE author? If so, who and name a couple books.

Does it have to be fiction?

If not I'm going to say Russ Kick and if so I'm going to say H.P. Lovecraft and I think you can figure that one out.

Russ Kick is more of an editor though, but hey whatever he has books.

I can definitely name my least favorite author: Dan Brown. His books read like an itemized list of fuck ups.

Well I haven't read many books but I started reading Warhammer 40k novels and I loved Dan Abnett's novels so I guess he is my favourite ^_^
Eisenhorn Omnibus - even if you are not a 40k fan you will love this novel(3-in-1). It's fantastic. It's a detective story filled with over-the-top 40k action ^_^

No it doesn't have to be fiction. I am primarily a non-fiction reader and personally I'm not sure that I have a favorite author myself.

Terry Goodkind. I enjoy the fact that as a writer he never underestamates the intelligence of his audience. All of the books he has written have been really interesting and populated with fantastic characters.

Philip K Dick for me, too. Playing all this Fallout 3 recently has made me go back and reread Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? because it's only just occurred to me how similar their worlds are.

Outside of that, other favourites from him include Time Out of Joint, Eye in the Sky, A Scanner Darkly and Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said (which has the best description of tripping balls I've ever read). I was always convinced that A Scanner Darkly couldn't be made into a film, and I'm very glad that Richard Linklater proved me wrong.

On the subject of PKD books being made into films, I can't believe that Next came out of one of my favourite Dick short stories, The Golden Man. Ugh. It's such a shame that for every movie that translates the essence of his writing correctly, there's another that has no clue whatsoever.

Right now, my favorite Authors are David Baldacci, James Patterson, and Robert B. Parker, who sadly died recently.

1. Robert B. Parker: I loved his Jesse Stone series, and Gunman's Rhapsody.  It wasn't a very action-packed book, but It was a great and dramatic story about Wyatt Earp, and the chapters flowed smoothly and quickly.

2.  James Patterson: I've read two of his Women's Murder Club Books, 3rd Degree, and 4th of July, and they were both incredibly suspenseful, and exciting.  Lindsay Boxer is a great protagonist, and smart, too.   5th Horseman is another book from that series I just recently got from the library.

3. David Baldacci: I've read two books from David Baldacci: Saving Faith, and The Collectors.  The Collectors, was an incredibly violent, suspenseful, and exciting book, and had a few plot lines that meshed very well together.  Saving Faith started out slow, but got more interesting as the plot moved along.   My opinion of David Baldacci, is that he knows how to make his books exciting, but he takes his time telling the stories he's written.

An honorable mention goes to Clive Cussler.  I read one book from him, called The Chase, and it was a very entertaining historical action-adventure story, with a great protagonist called Isaac Bell.  I'm looking forward to reading more books from him.

I plan to read more books, from these authors sometime later this year, and maybe I'll find some more thriller books from other authors that look good too.

Very interesting. I think he may have been one of my favorites years ago. I really need to get into reading fiction again.

Glad to see there are quite a number of people who like to read. :D

Hmm... I don't really read a lot.

George Orwell seems pretty good, but I'm not familiar with enough authors to make a comfortable judgment.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I'll definitely have to dive into some suggestions and try out some new authors.

And woot for another Glenn Beck fan. I haven't read his stuff yet but I'm a fan of his show and he has some good material from what I've seen. I agree with most everything he talks about and I love his personality. I actually saw the Bold Fresh Tour in the theater with a friend . . . ;)

I am going to sit on the fence between Haruki Murakami, 'Dance, Dance, Dance' and 'Kafka on the Shore' being two particular favourites of mine, and Kurt Vonnegut, just about everything he did was genius but for the sake of naming some titles lets say 'Cat's Cradle' and 'Breakfast of Champions'.
