.... And by "we" I mean "me" because I'm the only person who runs this lark but you get my speech, word. Please refrain from my likely switching between the term "I" and "we", it's a habbit.
So, after 7 months and 261,761 unique readers, I've decided to have a facelift on the ol' PushSquare homepage. Why? Because I was more and more getting the feeling that the old blog layout meant newcomers coming into the site weren't getting our big stories (like our reviews, which actually doesn't lead on a good story at the moment because like, there have been no releases and Alone In The Dark is stuck in there for the sake of filling out the DB, but you get the idea, it's usually timely reviews) because the blog format allows content to be buried so easily.
I now have a totally different concern about news content being buried - but that's for another topic.
Anyway, basically I want feedback. I'd say what I've launched tonight is 80% complete. I still have a list of things to fix, but I'm also aware people have different browsers and different opinions. What do you think looks good/bad/terrible/horrible/butt-shit ugly/fucking unusable? How're things in your browser.
I appreciate you guys probably DON'T want to spend your evening giving me feedback. But I've got a small list building, and I intend to fix all the things on that first, then work with the feedback I receive. It's an ongoing thing.
So yeah. I'm really grateful to anyone who feeds back. Or anyone who just drops by and adds up that RSS feed. We're a pretty good Playstation site I think; we're now certainly one of the (if not the) biggest unofficial Playstation-only sites in Europe.
And for that I'm pretty proud. So rock it up. Hit me up. Tell me I suck. Whatever. Constructive criticism is a brilliant invention, and I'm not a tool who asks for it and can't take it.
Feed me cake. Thanks so much.

So We Just Launched A New Homepage...

Hey good stuff making your own website.. just get advertising and it could get famous!
So u made this by yourself? that's pretty awesome..
Pity i don't have any playstation..
But yes I see your point and that's what makes it so hard to get noticed, but as long as that hit meter keeps cranking upward, I'd like to think that as a site, we're improving what we're doing and people respect that and come back from time to time. And I can't really ask for more.
Also, actually on the USP point, there aren't many (good) Playstation-only blogs around. Surprisingly.
I think yours is the criticism that's always said most when I come to forums for feedback -- no, there probably isn't reason for PushSquare to exist. The Internet could live happily without it. It is another games blog. But while people are reading we're going to carry on.
Thanks for your feedback.
I see on your site that you do the same thing are you schizophrenic? Well the lay-out looks good I can't judge your writing cause I'm dyslectic so I don't like reading so you have to have something I really want to read or els I will just leave your sit as I did after browsing for 10 min.. But this is also due to me not being a ps3 fanboy and their are 10 sites that have the same content that you have.. Sorry dude I'll stick to those sites... But I wish you the best of luck....." .... @THAfara0: Appreciated. Hey at least you like the layout, right? :)
Wordpress is overused, you should consider moving to SquareSpace, you can even import all your pages from Wordpress into it, so all your data would still be intact. And it would help set you aside from the rest of those plain looking blogs.
@get2sammyb: I think it depends on the site really. I think a lot of sites that use a bit like GiantBomb's scrolling picture thing at the top, or say Gamespot's main articles thing that have too. Each work very well. Less content is better, I think. Gamespot doesn't have TOO much content on the front page, just a little overwhelming, really. This is the reason I don't read further than the top 5 articles/latest headlines.
Giantbomb has their featured articles at the top, which are right in your face, then under them is a few links, describing what it is, and a brief view on the topic. Very easy to see what you want, and if you do want more, it has tabs above this, which open into more specific things. It's just easier to catch up, and doesn't look too cluttered.
I'm not too sure how I would go around it, maybe a little less content, but bolder main articles?
I'll get back to you.
I'll probably be sleeping between this post and my next but know in advance I'm really grateful to your responses. Even if it is terribly nerve-wracking (sp?) opening yourself up for critique like this. It's always mega helpful.
" @pornstorestiffi: Can you even host your own version of SquareSpace? It's probably not something I'd look into - if indeed Wordpress is "overused" I'd argue because it's fabulous software but each to his own. Alas, feedback on why the sites pages are "plain" could come in really helpful for future tweaks so I'd really appreciate your response. And the editor they offer is super sweet. You should check the site just for fun, to see what other pages made with it can look like. I think they have a video also where they show the editor in work, and i think they show them duplicating a web page in a matter of no time.
There is also the option to try it for free.
Also i didn't mean to sound like i don't like your site. Its just that i don´t take Wordpress pages like serious pages, for me they give off the wrong impression, like its not very professional. Granted i don´t know if thats what your going for, or if you just want it to remain a fun side project.
Its confusing, Its just like text with all these different fonts and there are like pictures and Im like, What?
What Im trying to say is that theres too much stuff going on in the front page, I would lose like the trailers section from the front page and put it on the top menu instead.
Also, the home page should tell you what the site is all about as well. There plenty of room for content on the rest of the site.
I like the clean-cut look of the site and the fact that it isn't overbearing in its presentation, but I think it has got a bit of a jumbled look about it, and I'm having a hard time finding a definite focal point. For example, the "What's Up Party People..." headline features larger text than any other story on the homepage and naturally draws the eye, but at the same time the larger image and blue box background behind the "Alone in the Dark Review" headline also attracts attention. Which story is meant to be the major draw on the page?
My main advice to you would be to do more to differentiate between the headlines/links in the three different columns on the page so that there is a definite focal point that can be easily recognized as the most important item on the page. I'd recommend you play around with font sizes/styles, as well as colors, to either make the featured item more prominent or the secondary items more subtle. You do a good job of using color and borders in the bottom half of the page, but it could also use a bit of differentiation in font sizes/styles between the different sections. Hope that helps!
