Two Routers on One Network

Hey Guys,

So I picked up wideband Internet from Time Warner and they replaced my modem with an Arris G852 which is a hybrid modem/ router. The problem is I already have a good router in my ApplebTime Capsule. 

From what I've read online I need to turn on Bridge Mode on the Arris modem/router and let the Apple Time Capsule hand out IPs to all my wifi connected devices.  Are there any other settings I should turn off on the Arris? Once it's in Bridge Mode should I make sure DHCP is turned off? Do I want make sure it has a DNS or should all of that be handled on my Time Capsule? Also since the Arris is in Bridge mode do I have NAT and DHCP enabled on my Time Capsule? I've been pulling my hair out with this for days now any help in the right direction is much appreciated. 

Well first off.. are you doing this wired or wirelessly? If its wired then it's super easy, basically when you turn it to bridged mode your turning your second router into a glorified switch. If you're trying to bridge it wirelessly, that's a whole different story. Most router firmware I have seen doesn't natively support wireless bridging, I have had to do it with DD-WRT firmware on two different routers and it worked like a dream.

As for NAT.. definitely turn all that stuff off on your second router. I'm not 100% sure about DHCP though, you would have to test it. My thoughts would be the main router would hand out the addresses. as your second router would just defer the DHCP request to the main router.

Thanks for the reply. The only hardwire I have is the Arris to the Apple TC's WAN port which is what I was advised to do. Just to be clear when you suggest turning off NAT and turning on Bridge Mode on the second router, that being the Arris correct? I'd prefer to use my Apple TC as my main router as its more stable and easier to configure.

I'm assuming bridge mode just makes it function as a switch and modem. If it does that well, you won't have to do anything else, but if its an option you should probably disable NAT and DHCP on it (unless its a setting for getting an IP via DHCP, you want that on, it should have both). Not sure what you mean by make sure it has a DNS. You should have DHCP enabled on one of them, so if not the arris then the time capsule. If your setup is the internet connects to the arris which connects to the time capsule which connects to everything else, then enable NAT and DHCP on the time capsule.

I was thinking about doing something like this with 2 wi-fi routers also. Have a G-standard network on 2.4ghz and 2 N-standard networks on 2.4 and 5ghz. But I guess there'd be interference between the 2 2.4ghz networks. Poop.
