I remember a show, I believe it was called Brainiac, and they did an investigation into subliminal messages. They showed a film to a bunch of people in a theater and had subliminal messages going through it, that would appear within a blink of an eye, such things as "yawn" or "hug." When the yawn message came up, many people in the theater yawned.

I have no idea why they would do this on the show you are talking about though, as they couldn't possibly do a study from someone's reaction in their homes... Unless they're watching you...

Subliminal Advertising? You'd be amazed.

As far as I know, though, flashing images for advertising purposes is illegal.

Are subliminal messages legal?
In Australia and Britain, the use of subliminal advertising has been banned with severe consequences for those who disobey the strict laws. In the United States, not much is being done from a legal standpoint to curn the use of subliminal messages. The Federal Communications Commission, however, will now revoke a company's broadcast license if the use of "subliminal techniques" is proven. The following is from the FCC's Manual for Broadcasters:

We sometimes receive complaints regarding the alleged use of subliminal techniques in radio and TV programming. Subliminal programming is designed to be perceived on a subconscious level only. Regardless of whether it is effective, the use of subliminal perception is inconsistent with a station's obligation to serve the public interest because the broadcast is intended to be deceptive. (Federal Communications Commission Record, 2001)

Ah man, I love that guy. Derren Brown is brilliant.

Is he well known, or known at all, in the USA?

Why is there always an apocalypse approaching? First Y2K, then 9/11, now 2012. It's nothing but the start of a new age. I may be revolutionary and some people consider it the next step in evolution. Right now we're in the age of religion and the next age is technology. It's not doomsday or whatever you want to call it. Go to 2012wiki.com if you want to read everything.

I see the standard apocalypse warning is coming around again, 2012 seems to have stuck as a bit of a favourite. But there's definately something fishy about those subliminal messages, I'm afraid I don't have a clue what they're about but I'd be very interested to know. Oh and Derren Brown is mind-blowingly awesome.
