Why are there 2 soap things in a dishwasher?

Every time I wash dishes, I just put an electrosol tab in the soap thing that can open and close. Why is there another one next to it that is open? If I put soap in that one too, will my dishes be extra clean?

Have you tried New Clinex's Ultra Super Dish Wash Self package? It works just like the two of the soap things.
