I've been pretty inactive on GB for the past week or two because of this.
Before I explain how this affects you, I want to tell everyone to save your money. Spend sparingly because every thing is about to go downhill. Things might be looking pretty good at the moment, but just wait until November and you'll see what I mean. This affects everyone. Even you Europeans and Australians over there.
Some of you may already know this, but I'm gonna give you some background. My family has lived off of cotton since the early 1800s. We have a 600 acre cotton farm in south Alabama that has survived through our nation's history. Yes, my ancestors had slaves and most of the slave houses on our farm are preserved for their historical significance. It survived the War of 1812, the Civil War, WW1, the Great Depression, WW2, Hurricane Frederick, Hurricane Katrina(a lot of other hurricanes too)and everything in between. We have made a comfortable yet rewarding living off of it.
Slave "Cabin 3"
This is one of our slave houses. We call it "Cabin 3" because that's what our ancestors called them. They referred to each cabin by a number.
Cotton prices just continued to rise, and we profited off of it. Because cotton prices were high, you payed more for your clothes and furniture. Because you payed more for your clothes and furniture, the government got more tax money from you. When the government has a solid source of revenue coming in, they charge businesses less taxes, which allowed them to pay you and your parents a higher salary. It's basic high school economics.
Well everyone here knows what happens when the price of something rises really high for an extended period of time, right? Come on, think. It's one of the reasons we're in this recession- Remember when the housing bubble burst?
Well, now the cotton bubble has burst.
When we harvested in 2007, cotton prices were about 70 cents/pound, which is a fairly high price. There's 480 pounds/bale and we normally produce a little over 1000 bales of cotton on an OK year.
When we harvested in 2008, cotton prices were about 85 cents/pound. We felt like we struck gold last year, but then we soon realized what was happening.
Right now, cotton prices are at 55 cents/pound. Yes it's normal for prices to drop after a good year, but not to these extremes. 55 cents/pound is a terrible price and it looks like it's going down down down. We've received a letter from the Department of Agriculture. It pretty much said, "We are doing everything we can to get the funding to subsidize cotton. We should have the funding in 6 months so please remain calm".
My dad tells me that they told us that same thing in the late 1960's recession. We're still waiting...
So why do I have to do this? Because we love our farm. Also, cotton is a necessity. Cotton is used for everything, even manufacturing goods. When cotton prices go down, the prices of everything else will go down because cotton is used for everything. This is a bad thing, not a good thing.
I'm going to be in charge of the farm, and my dad is going to look for a desk job. He has a Masters Degree in Accounting, so he hopes he has a better chance of getting a desk job than I do.
My mom told me everything happens for a reason. I'm trying to find the good in this, but it's hard. I'll get to do what I've always enjoyed, but I wanted a college degree more than anything. I'm not gonna turn my back on them though; they've given me everything they could: I went to a private school, they payed for college, they gave me every opportunity they could.
At least I'll get to spend more time on Giant Bomb! I guess that's one positive.
So I've been getting SPAM mail like crazy these last 2 weeks. They're all from "Canadian Pharmacy: The Number One Online Drug Store".
Looks pretty official huh? Especially the bottom where it sys "Report Spam" and "Contact Us"
Guess what they sell.
Viagra and Adderall. I mean if this is the average pharmacy in Canada, they must be machines in bed. Nitric Oxide and a Stimulant- talk about a 24 hour sex drive.

So according to the CAN-SPAM Act that Bush signed in 2004, they're supposed to put a working unsubscribe button in their emails. They have an unsubscribe button, but all it does is redirect you to the home page.

I tried clicking both of those. Every time you click "Report Spam", it adds Viagra to your shopping cart. Every time you click "Contact Us", it adds Adderall to your shopping cart.
There is no possible way to remove yourself from the mailing list.
So I went to the WhoIs database and looked them up. It's obviously a fake address. It's in Moscow, Russia.
After doing more research on this, I learned they have like 15 different domain names all registered in different countries.
It's fucking bull shit.
I tried replying to the Email threatening to take them to court if they don't remove me from the database because they violated the CAN-SPAM Act.
Guess what it did. It sent a mass email to over 1500 people on their mailing list.
If anyone has ever been able to remove themselves from this SPAM, please tell me how you did it. It's ridiculous.
I swear if I can figure out who this person is, I will do terrible things to them.
I don't know if any of you have heard of Cheeburger Cheeburger. It's a burger place that was voted one of the best burger places in the US. They offer a huge 'one pounder' that's actually 20 oz. If you eat it, you get your picture on the wall. There's only about 30 pictures on the wall here.

Well, I decided to go for it. I've eaten big burgers before, but this one is the most filling burger I've had.
I actually ate it. It took me almost an hour though. I took pictures of it, and pictures of my friend's burger because he decided to try it Now my picture is on the wall, but at the cost of my arteries.
It's the 2nd best burger I've ever had- after Ms. Ann's Ghettoburger in Atlanta when I went there a couple months ago.

But the 20 oz 'pounder' at Cheeburger Cheeburger is almost twice as big.

I'm sorry if a lot of you are sick of this song, but I just stumbled on the video on CMT.com a few minutes ago and thought it was hilarious. It's cheesy comedy, but the rap video is the best part.

Man. I've been working on this one page for a week. I even skipped a few classes last week to get it up! I was gonna write pretty much the whole thing myself, but decided that could take months, then there would be errors, then I'd have to fix them for a few more weeks. So I decided, for now, to get a template, and modify it myself to look the way I wanted, and play games. It already has over 400 visitors. 40 of them added it to their favorites(according to my control panel). Not bad for one day, and no advertising.
It's a little more complicated than I thought it would be. I thought the site would be up in a day. But if you don't make it yourself, you don't know where everything is, and you don't know exactly how it works. That's one disadvantage.
Another disadvantage to using a template is optimizing it to be search engine friendly. There are some sites that rate how search engine friendly you are, and I'm still only at 85%. You have to change the tags that the search engines' robots read so that they'll put your page higher up in the search engines. They're web crawlers like "Googlebot" and "Yahoo Slurp" and "Mercator"(alta vista). There are a lot of other things that they take into consideration: like relevancy, traffic, how many other sites link to it, etc...
If I want to attract visitors, I'm gonna have to build it myself. Which I will. This is just temporary. I wanted it and I wanted it now haha.
But flash games sites are extremely popular. The flash games part of the site was up yesterday, and it's already attracted over 300 UNIQUE visitors and over 800 games played. It's only one part of my site though. I plan on adding a video part, similar to ebaumsworld so that only I can upload videos. It saves storage and bandwidth to not allow people to upload videos.
I found a site that will supply you with flash games, as long as you let them put their 5 second video ads in front of it. You get a little money every 1000 times one of their ads is played on your server. It's the same site AddictingGames gets most of it's games from. So I used that. Transfered all 7,000 flash games to my server, deleted the sucky ones, then rearranged it so the better games were on the front page. They really are fun games though.
Only about half of the visitors are from search engines, so I'm gonna need to fix that so I get better rankings on search engines. The rest are from Digg.
I'm just glad I'm getting traffic. The more traffic, the higher you rank, and that means more traffic.
Any suggestions? It looks pretty good to me. Just needs a few changes that you probably won't be able to see.
Here it is. The home page sucks right now. Don't even go there. That's why I only linked you to the flash games part of the site. I'm using a temporary homepage called Joomla. I'm rebuilding the home page from the ground up with Dreamweaver right now, so It'll soon have a better layout, and it'll have real navigation that will take you to other parts of the site, when they're up.
