This game is $3.99 during the Steam summer sale and I was mildly interested in playing it when it came out. Is it worth buying and playing for that price?
Worth $3.99?
Any game is worth <$5. I played it this year and its pretty good. I thought it was a really good challenge on Hard difficulty, it looked great and the story, especially the ending, was surprising. Solid game with some flaws but good time. Just a few of the screenshots i took in game.
It was fine for $10 or $12, which is what I paid for it. You will get five bucks of enjoyment out of it. It has an interesting aesthetic and some okay shooting mechanics. The AI is dumb though and the story shits the bed about 3/4ths of the way through. Looks great on PC, too, although I ran into some nasty graphical hiccups because I run an AMD gpu instead of an Nvidia.
I really enjoyed my time with it. It's got some issues, but I thought the gameplay was super fun, the aesthetic was great, and the I liked the story a lot more than I expected.
So wait I'm noticing a lot of talk about AMD issues here. How bad are the graphics issues? I have a 7850 btw.
Man, it's so weird that this game was their big idea to reboot X-Com. I remember they announced this first, it got delayed forever, Enemy Unknown came out and won a bunch of GOTY awards, and then this came out and was less than well-received. But hey, I'll give it a try for $4.
Seriously...I did play a few minutes of this on Xbox and it seemed fine. I just picked up both this and Enemy Unknown for $8.74 or so. Thats nothing.
Did a little research and I think I'm gonna pass this up and go for the discount on Enemy Within instead. Never got that dlc and I still need to finish enemy unkown
yeah, go ahead and pick it up for less than $5. I really enjoyed the combat as I'm a fan of this Mass Effect style shooting. the story kind of goes off the rail but the game's um... the game is sort of fun.
@gaminghooligan: It'll run fine, if you disable certain features like reflections. However, my biggest issue was setting the shadows to high. It caused this really annoying shadow flicker and I had to turn the setting down to medium. Just look up "XCOM: The Bureau shadow flicker" on the Google box.
This game is absolutely worth $5. Hell, I'd push it for $10.
Personally, I had issues with the controller controls. I cursed the game, rage-quit, and all but gave up on it for a couple of weeks but there was this something that drew me back to it. This time around I went the mouse/keyboard route and the experience was MUCH better. This seemed to improve my commands being received and accepted by my AI partners. Just my 2cents.
I just have to say this: It is not 3rd person tactical shooter, it is alien themed parenting simulator. You need some serious babysitting skills to do well in this game.
At the moment you can get a Steam key for this from the 2K Humble Bundle for a dollar.
