So I just picked up a Wii U for 100 euros on a whim. I want to do some Mario Making, but what the heck else should I be in to?

I'll probably be handing it over to my folks at Christmas so Virtual Console is probably out.

  • Bayonetta 2
  • Zelda Wind Waker
  • Super Mario 3D World

If you have some extra controllers and friends to play with, Mario Kart and Smash Brothers can be fun

Among the many awesome games already mentioned, I just want to stress that Xenoblade Chronicles X is an awesome RPG if that's your thing, and because it hasn't been said yet, The Wonderful 101 is a charming, fun, and challenging action game that I don't think gets as much love as other Platinum titles. Granted, it's worth mentioning that it's longer than most games of its type and it can be sometimes be a little frustrating when the game makes you figure out some of the tougher parts with little guidance, but it pays off so well, especially if you have any fond memories of Power Rangers/Super Sentai.

In my humble opinion:

Bayonetta 2
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Devil's Third (I know, I know; but it might be worth a shot)
Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze
Hyrule Warriors
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD
Lego City: Undercover
Mario Kart 8
New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U
Super Mario 3D World
Super Mario Maker
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Yoshi's Wooly World
ZombiU

Congrats on your bargain, duder.

At the risk of repeating, I can confirm these purchases each made ownership of this 'failed' system worthwhile:

  • Splatoon - honestly the only FPS I truly have enjoyed for some time. More hours on this than anything else.
  • Mario Maker - you have it already; but two games in one, and a truly unique thing. Only one which makes sense of the gamepad concept.
  • Super Mario 3D World - the Mario game which reminds you how far Nintendo thinks design through: from movement, to levels, to innovation.
  • Wind Waker HD - full disclosure: I haven't finished, but I can see what a masterpiece this is, and I would say essential if you haven't completed the earlier release. I'm really looking forward to getting back into this shortly.

I do like Mario Kart (and I'm a real fan of the series), but I have to admit I haven't really replayed it in the way I did earlier versions.

I've also found the Virtual Console stuff great, but the above are the ones I would say make your 100 Euro splash a worthwhile one, in my experience.

Have fun!

If you want something a little Wipeout like, Fast Racing Neo is a decent futuristic racing game.

Oh -

As no-one has yet mentioned Pikmin 3, I'll give in an honourable mention.

Not essential in my book, but it it certainly different, and carries the usual levels of Nintendo charm and design philosophy. For me, it has acted as something of a palate cleanser on the system.

Splatoon is awesome! Haven't tried Pikmin 3 but I'd really like to, and Wind Waker HD is great (although the original is my favorite game of all time so maybe that's me)

Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE

I didn't see anyone list this but here's my two cents. I agree with the other games people have listed prior.

If you like Pokemon and also fighting games, Pokken Tournament is a really fun, really accessible addition to your Wii U library.

When you think about it, Wii U has some damn fine games. Real shame.
