charleytony's Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved (Xbox 360 Games Store) review

The very definition of an Arcade game

Explaining Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved is rather simple.

A 2-D, overhead view, space shooter where your ship and your enemies are geometrical shape. Each type (shape) of enemy has a specific pattern and the game becomes increasingly difficult as more and more enemies appear. Your weapons consist of an assortment of (random) projectiles and also bombs, which happen to clear the whole screen but have the disadvantage of  robbing you of the points you would have scored if you shot down those enemies.

Reading this might make this game seem ordinary and outdated, but the experience you get when playing it is something else. First conceived as a tool that would help experiment with the graphical capabilities of the original Xbox, Geometry Wars (before its retro evolved counterpart) ended up as a hidden game available in the garage of Project Gotham Racing 2. When Bizarre Creations began working on the 3rd game of this series, which was their debut on the Xbox 360, they conceived a new version of this game and pushed the visuals even further. The end result is a classic, simple game concept that blowed everyone away. The 5 $ downloadable game was really fun and almost addictive. Every time you play you would get better and better, going further into the game, setting a higher High Score...

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved is a pretty hard game, but not in a bad way. It is not impossibly difficult, simply demanding. As you progress, you find ways of dealing with the insane amount of enemies who are bent on your destruction. The only thing that can save you is making more points, which will give you in return additionnal lives and bomb (handy when you cant even figure out how to get out of a tough situation). For people who like games that are inspired by older arcade games, this is a must play.

This game is not recommanded for people who have frequent seizures when exposed to flashing lights, extremely bright colors and repetitive techno music.
