G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero is a licensed multiplayer shoot-em-up from Epyx, for the Commodore 64 and Apple II home computers. The game features multiple gameplay modes, a variety of selectable characters, and equipment from the eponymous toy line.

    Gameplay

Gameplay is broken up into several modes:

    Overworld Map

Gameplay starts at the overworld map. There are two mission types available at various areas of the map. Indicators include a round flash (for "Heavy Equipment Confrontations") and pointed flash (for "Personal Combat"). Once a flash on the map is selected, gameplay proceeds for that mission type.

    Cobra Enemy Screen

In single player combat, an opponent is automatically selected, from one of eight Cobra operatives. In two-player mode, player two chooses an operative.

    Heavy Equipment Confrontation

In this mode of combat, a single player controls Ace or Wild Bill in air combat. In two player co-operative mode, both players control different parts of the Motorized Battle Tank or VAMP Jeep. In either mode, the player(s) must eliminate Cobra defenses with a variety of Air to Ground and Ground based missiles.

    Personal Combat

Players select one of 1 of 12 characters to engage in combat against the computer, or player-2 controlled cobra enemy. Each character has different weapons and abilities, and each match is played on one of several different locales.
