Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
A female warrior from the Amazons, an all-female nation in Classical and Greek mythology.
Supernatural armor that moves on its own. This could be due to possession, magic or animatronics.
Games centred around Barbarians. A barbarian is usually recognised by his/her long flowy hair, loincloth and animal skins, lack of clothes and sword (not the same as cavemen).
Barbarians in games are often known for their brute strength, large size compared to normal humans, appetite for meat and ale, general crudeness, and prowess in melee combat.
Be it an “unopenable” door, a sprawling fence, a sudden outcropping of land, an ocean, a cliff (often a deadly ocean/cliff combo,) a broken-down car, an “invisible wall,” or large trees; barriers in video games manifest themselves in a variety of forms (physical and otherwise).
A term for a humanoid creature with animalistic features which can comprehend everything from slightly feral humans to savage monsters with trace amounts of anthropomorphism.
Belt scrolling is a 2D perspective, side-scrolling action with downward camera angle. The character is able to move not only sideways, but also vertically within a limited area, giving pseudo-3D depth. Mostly used by beat 'em up brawlers, this term is mainly used in Japan and comes from the conveyor belt like viewpoint.
Bats, hammers, wrenches, maces, staves, or even brass knuckles. These are weapons intended for blunt trauma rather than cutting or slicing.
Bonus levels, rounds, or stages give players a chance to gain extra points, powerups, or lives. Occasionally bonus stages will play completely different than the rest of the game, like as a slot machine or pinball minigame.
Not all bosses can handle the player by themselves. Many use waves of lesser enemies to fight for them while they rest, and some even let these minions do all the work.
A boss fight is a culminating challenge that pits the player against one or more enemies representing a greater threat and/or difficulty than those previously faced. These scenarios typically feature unique antagonists.
Some creatures don't need guns or swords to hurt you. Instead they pack a punch with some kind of deadly breath attack, be it flaming, poisonous, radioactive, or just plain bad!
Jacking is the act of taking control of a vehicle that is not under the player's rightful or original possession, and may or may not have been taken out of another player's or NPC's possession.
A concept in games with multiple characters, a screen with pictures of all playable characters with the possibility of stat listings.
The iconic mount from the Golden Axe series.
The main line of distinction between victory or failure in video games, death is the process of a biological being ceasing to be alive.
Dragons were originally messengers from heaven, according to early Buddhist texts. In games, they can be among the most fearsome of adversaries, but there are some exceptions.
'Drop-In' is a style of co-op gameplay where extra players can join the 1st player seamlessly without having to quit the game or navigate any menus. Many of these games do allow players to 'Drop-Out' of the game in a similar manner.
The player character jumps on the back of an enemy during a battle to take control of them.
When a game lets players grab enemies and throw them as projectiles. Commonly found in platformers, but also sometimes found in over-the-top 3rd person action games.
This concept is for games where at least one of the main characters is female.
Commonly seen in brawlers, typically with the word "go" next to it, this is an indicator in side-scrolling games of which way to go, and usually an indicator that all of the enemies in an area have been defeated.
A term that can be used to refer to RPGs that focus more on the action, or brawler action games which focus on hack & slash gameplay.
Health is a value that gauges how much damage players can take in a game before they die or pass out. Also known as life in some games. Health is usually represented by a bar or a percentage instead of an exact amount. Found in most non sport games
An effect or ability that pushes an object or person away. Often found in, but not limited to, explosive weapons.
A common type of stage based around the fire and/or lava element. Often platforming heavy and inhabited by fire-based enemies.
When the player/enemy leap towards the enemy/player, effectively dealing damage in the same turn.
First popularized by Golden Axe, a loot pinata is a harmless enemy that may be repeatedly pummelled for bonus items.
The concept of affecting the universe through supernatural methods, breaking the fundamental laws of science.
