It's definitely gran turismo, but something is wrong.

Gran Turismo 6 review for PS3 by Dorian B.

So gran turismo 6 is out and it’s … not finished. Not that i can expect any game to be finished when updating a game couldn’t be easier on today’s consoles. Well that fact aside let’s talk about the game.

In short GT6 is good nut don’t get it now! Why? Let’s start with the bad stuff that ruins the overall GT6 experience.

-The used car dealership is gone, and there are two sides to this, good and bad, good is that you don’t have to play forever to make a certain car appear and then realise you don’t have enough credits so the car is gone. The bad is that collecting cars loses it’s fun, I personally loved checking the used car dealership after each race in previous games to get a new used car, or notice a car I’ve never heard of it was great. It gave me a great reason to race. And just buying a used was more fun, Now it feels like a forza clone where buying cars is just a boring thing. BRING THAT BACK!!!

Also another bad thing that comes with the lack of UCD is that the not premium cars come in only one colour, and in UCD cars came in variety of colours. And changing colours in GT6 didn’t change from GT5 you still need to collect paints.

And also the game doesn’t tell you which cars aren’t premium, only indication is that you can’t go to gallery view.

-Now speaking of painting, in GT5 you got 5 or more random colours just for turning the game on daily, here this doesn’t exist and you’re left with a very small variety of colours, 70% of the not premium cars are white, grey or black. Got to love the variety.

-Gran Turismo 6 features a new lighting system as far as I’m aware and night and day just look amazing but shadows in the distance flicker and are bigger than they actually are, some shadows are just black pixels, But some shadows look great from close.

-Another visual problem is texture, far building and shadow pop up, and it’s not as bad as it could have been but when you race and something pops up you’re like what the hell happened and you get distracted. The trees on some tracks looks fake as hell and on some they're 3d nice looking trees. Why?

-Framerate and screen tear are present in this game, there was frameerate and screen tear problem in GT5 but here depending on the day you play it’s better or worse. Smoke and dust also can drop the frames, plus some section of tracks with 3 cars close equal frame drops. But the worst thing is that the framerate never goes so bad it’s unplayable it just irritates and disappoints your eyes and that’s just bad.

-The garage is another problem. But why you must ask? Well in GT5 (or any gt) before a race you had to change to an appropriate car to be able to race in a specific race, well when you enter the garage you don’t get the spinning preview of a car, all you get is a tiny miniature from a side, unless you’re an expert on car you won’t know what car it is; and yeah sure there is the name next to it, but there are different models, version, if you tune the car it’s different, GT5 had a way better car preview garage. Plus there is no way to sort the not premium from the premium cars. And again GT5 had it!

-Collecting money in the game is very grinding, you get little to no cash; I believe it’s very similar to GT4 but GT5 had a great money grinding I was easily able to afford stuff.

-Now last but very minor complaint, the game has been very easidified (is that even a word?) When you start the game for the first time you get a tutorial, just like the ones from endless runner on phones. After the turial you get a menu tutorial because I don’t know how to read a f****g menu, and the game forces you to buy some shitty car that I couldn’t care for, give me a choice!

-The licences have been changed and reduced in amount (only up to IB), you don’t need to obtain a licence to race, all you need is to finish the tutorial, then you go into the career and race but, there has albo been another change, you no longer collect cups now it’s all about start 1st place 3 stars, 2nd place 2 stars, 3rd place 1 start the rest of the places can suck it. But in order to race in higher classes you need to obtain licences, how do you obtain licence you need to unlock it by collecting stars plus additionally you can’t do them all just to get of the way and actually learn to play the game. Each class has a separate licence to unlock for the next class. I think it’s just messy. It was perfect in every previously game why change it? Good old saying if it’s not broken don’t fix it doesn’t apply here.

-The game features microtransactions, completely optional but I thought I would get that out. Every game is doing that now GTA 5 also has that. And as someone from sony said it’s implemented nicely not evil. So you can use them but you can live without it like a normal person.

-The game heavily relies on the online concept of the “we can fix it with an update” attitude. Not very professional if you ask me.

Now the good stuff, after this long bad list you’re probably thinking there are no redeeming qualities to this game and you’d be wrong.

-Music is just awesome as usual, I’m not talking about the licenced music but the GT6 music, the jazz funk and rock just eargasm music. I miss the tunning song from GT5 aswell as the used car dealership music and when you buy a car, these were the most memorable songs and they’re not here for obvious reasons (progression of series, lack of ucd)

-in terms of the licenced sountrack I always have a problem with it that it needs to grow on me. I never like it at frist but after a year I really enjoy it so I’ll talk about it in a year or two.

-People complain about the car sounds being bad, and I’m like well they’re not bad and they’re not the greatest, they feel weak that’s for sure, but bad? Not really.

-Graphically the game is actually gorgeous if you can overlook the previously mentioned graphical hiccups. The premium cars look as hot as ever, the not premium cars still look great but if a race is a mixed bag of these two you know which one is premium and which one is not.

-The most impressive feature sure it the lighting, the night looks gorgeous; the sky is filled with stars and apparently it’s very accurate or something all I know is that it looks amazing, the day also looks beautiful but the shadows ruin it a bit. No matter what time of the day it looks amazing.

-The amount of cars in the game increased to almost 1200 cars but, you won’t notice which ones are now if you played GT5, at least I didn’t. 1200 cars if way to much to handle but it offers great variety. And most importantly Maza RX8 is in here in 4 version, Concept v1 and v2, the premium 2008, the standard 2003 model and variations I think. Now why isn’t there more Porshe or RUF cars it just kind of feels weak that no new models are here.

-The track list has also been upgraded, 37 tracks are now available, the classics are back, High Speed Ring, Autum Ring (personal favourite), Trail Mountain, Grand Valley there’s way too many to name but all the great ones are here, original, real, a rally tracks. But I miss some tracks like El Capitan, Smokey Mountain, Infineon, tahiti and midfield,. No reason why they couldn’t be in

-There is no track editor at the moment but it sucked in gt5 so no harm done. But I’m excited about the road to work/school track creator where you’ll need a 3g connection I think, and an app on your phone so it can record your walk and create a track out of it. Sounds awesome but it’s not included in the game.

-The game feature a lot of variety in races, normal GT races, night races, go cart races, time trials, drift, le mans, nascar, rally, coffee break missions, licence, and even moon driving, yes moon driving drive once and the novelty wears of, it’s fun first few times and it’s impressive in a way, but the slow paced and low gravity drive gets boring easily. Try it but don’t expect a gameplay replacer.

-The handling has apparently improved on a technical level, and the driving feels great, I have liteally no problems with it.

-The menu UI has received and make over, in short I has been simplified, everything is one place. I’m enjoying this only 30% the 70% percent had no problem with problematic and confusing menus because it felt like an accomplishment when I succeeded in finding something. There Is no more customisation of the menu like in GT5 kind of disappointing.

-The loading between the races and menu have been dramatically reduced, but you still have to wait to race, and when you press the race button you’re stuck in limbo where you can’t cancel to change something or check the stuff that’s displayed.

-The game requires a large file to install to the HDD but it does it gently but be sure to have atleast 30gb or 40gb free.

-There is multiplayer, online and personal, haven’t had a chance to try any of them out because online people don’t race, they take way to fast cars to handle and quit when start to lose, so I’m okay.

-As always you can take pictures of you premium car, but moving the car around the photo shoot place is somehow worse than in GT5, I had no issues there. First of all there is no map like in GT5 and you can’t move the car like in GT5.

-Why in time trials when I hit the wall and them get out of the track I’m being punished for the next lap? I get it that I get punished in this lap but why the next one? Makes no sense.

-Replays appear every time you finish the race and it takes seconds away from your life and you can’t turn them off so they won’t appear, you can skip them but that’s it.

-GT6 adds a in my honest opinion a great feature called Vision GT where famous 30 car makers make the car of their dreams and get them in the game, there are basically concept cars and there is only one for now but more is apparently coming. Also worth noting is that every new real racing car, will be automatically added in the game when it comes out in real life or something like that.

-The game lacks in daily rewards, online race events and UCD. But the developers said they’ll be adding stuff to the game in future. Well I’m playing it now, in the future I might be dead or playing something else, you have to think about that developers, I mean it’s great that the game get’s

I bet I missed few things out, but who cares. So Gran Turismo 6 is defiantly a sequel not just something that could have been add on through an update. The games add a lot of great features but it also takes away even greater features (UCD). While the game is not finished so stuff will be added, I feel cheated and mislead I thought this would be a game like GT5 but with new physics system, upgraded visuals, updated car list and more tracks, but what I get it’s a game with missing content and a day one patch.

As for now stick with GT5 is increadibly cheap to find a used or new copy. You’ll get more fun out of that one than this one. At least for now let’s all hope for the best.

-As of now when going back in the menu the game requires a long load for no reason.

    WHAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED

    1. Bring back used car dealership!!!

    2. Improve the garage with actual car preview.

    3. Bring back daily rewards.

    4. Improve the performance a bit.

    5. Do something about obtaining colours.

    6. Fix shadows and texture pop up.

    7. Fix the loading glitch.

    8. A custom race feature where you’d earn credits would be great.

    Small facts

    -no voice over

-no multi language (gt5 had it)

Other reviews for Gran Turismo 6 (PlayStation 3)

Gran Turismo 6 is the best racing game for people new to the series but is it for GT vets? 0

GT6 is essentially an updated, retooled version of GT5. It has a much better interface, much better load times, much better car models and more tracks. They also removed the insane and horribly implemented levelling system and have replaced it with a star system, so instead of getting XP for winning or doing well in races you now earn up to three stars per race. The game also starts you off with a race right before you can do anything, this is actually pretty great because before GT games have si...
