GRID 'First Play' Review
Having demoed this game on the PC, I knew it had something special to offer. However at the time, and in fact currently, my PC isn't up to spec for providing smooth gameplay. So when I chanced into XBOX 360 ownership recently I saw a chance to enjoy this game.
Grabbing a pre-owned copy from the local GAME store I booted up the 'box and got stuck into the game. I wasn't let down from my initial playthough on the PC. The feelings of speed in the game is really very good indeed, and the pre-race 'beat this guy' or 'finish ahead of this team' reminders add that extra incentive to get on with the racing.
Opting for control preset 3, where both steering and accelereation are stick controller, I quickly found my feet and started to rack up some rep and money and before very long had my own team on the go. The interesting mechanic of having a selection of pre-recorded names to pick from for the radio and team boss to use was a nice touch, however my girlfriends name was missing from the options, which I wouldn't bemoan except her name in Linda, which I'd hardly call unusual!
I have detected the occasional slowdown in frame rates during some high impact crashes with tyre walls and the like, however if anything it adds a touch of movie like stutter to the occasions which is easy to live with. I look forward to continuing with this game for some time, as I've not spent any real time with a racer since Burnout on the PS2!
