I tried searching for this but couldn't find anything. Does anyone know what the little P means when it shows up on your targeting reticle?

I believe there's an 'A' sometimes too?

My best guess would be 'Pick up' and 'Action' for those two, but I can't remember it ever being explained...

I think it means you can pick something up? I'm not entirely sure though

I can't say for sure, but that would make sense as an indicator of what pressing the space bar would do at some given moment. Also, either that was patched in at some point since I played the game or I just never noticed it, but I wish I'd known about a way of knowing what would happen when I pressed space when standing on both a prone enemy and a weapon. On the other hand, most of those situations happen in too short a time for an indicator to really matter, so it's kind of a moot point.

Yes, "P" means that you're standing over a pick-up.
