Kaiju

Concept »

Kaiju is the Japanese term for monster or strange beasts, commonly associated with giant monsters such as Godzilla. This theme has often appeared in games where the play has to battle or even play as a huge monster. An example would be 'Lard Lad' from The Simpsons Game.

Giant monsters in the movies have often been a key source of inspiration for many games. From Godzilla to King Kong and of course Giant Enemy Crabs, kaiju films have found themselves referenced or imitated in a variety of ways.

One of the earliest examples of this being done well is in the arcade classic 'Rampage', which not only featured a version of King Kong and Godzilla, but introduced an oversized wolf to complete the trio. In this game you played as the rampaging beasts, while other games such as Global Defence Force would see you as a soldier fighting them.

Final bosses have often been large creatures, as they make the player seem weak and vunerable by comparison. The overcoming of apparently impossible odds adds to the satisfaction of beating the boss, while also offering a chance to make the final encounter look and feel the most impressive. This however isn't always the case.
