When Mario jumps on a Koopa and kicks the shell, he can knock other enemies out down the line, and if he knocks enough out, he somehow gets an extra life (he can also do this be jumping on a shell repeatedly in certain areas). How does this work exactly? How does knocking enemies  down like that create life?  Also, if he jumps on that shell repeatedly too many times and gets too many extra lives, he causes the game to end, is this a warning of overpopulation, if there's too many Marios, the world will end?
