La-Mulana (LM) is a Zelda style dungeon-diver where the protagonist roams through variously-themed catacombs to collect weapons, tools, keys, and upgrades to steadily progress through the dungeons, solving puzzles and hunting monsters along the way. Difficulty: it’s the Dark Souls of video game discussion topics. We, as in games-people, have begun to look inward and point the microscope towards the art of making virtual tasks harder for a while now. The “how” has been progressively honed for ages, but games are increasingly wondering why. You may be driven mad by the bats and puzzles, but there's still satisfaction to be found 0
There’s a fine and often foggy line when it comes to games designed to be challenging, having to balance providing enough tools, mechanics and means for the player while also pressing them to effectively use them as the challenge climbs. La Mulana doesn’t really ride this line as it leans hard on the latter, only providing the former if you can crack the various puzzles it presents - And do so alive or without breaking your controller in the process.
