Simulating the effects of a great variety of poisons, toxins, venoms and nerve agents can lead to many unique and interesting mechanics. A classic trope in games, Poison usually deals small amounts of damage to health over time.
Referencing a TV show, celebrity, song, trend, historical event, etc. is one of the easiest ways to get a laugh. This can be either a throw-away gag, like the name of an achievement, or the main subject of the game.
Son of a monarch.
Procedural Generation refers to the creation of content algorithmically as the game is running. This content generally coexists with standard, authored content; the two are not mutually exclusive.
In games, punctuation marks, especially question marks and exclamation marks are used for a number of reasons, including locating quest givers and indicating surprise.
When you're able to push a block you know it's a videogame. Usually used to solve puzzles.
A Random Number Generator (hence RNG) is a system designed to randomize a sequence of numbers. Most games technically use a table of 'random' numbers, simulating random chance.
A larger or smaller version of an enemy encountered elsewhere in a game. Larger variants are often used as bosses.
Reversed controls occur when the player's movement controls are opposite, meaning pressing left will cause the character to move right.
A Secret area is a place hidden that few will find unless they know where to look.
The ability to complete sections of a game out of the intended order (or to skip them entirely) through skill and knowledge of the game.
No point in gathering coins, gold, gil, money, or whatever if you can't buy anything with it.
A blob consisting of some icky substance, the slime monster is one of the most used RPG monster clichés besides rats.
Non-stealth games with a mission or level where you must sneak/creep through an area undetected.
Crunchy frozen water fallen from the sky. Many games feature a snow world, a snow level, or otherwise-connected regions of wintery landscapes.
A two-dimensional image or animation overlaid into a scene. The foundation of early 2D games, making up everything from props to the player-controlled character.
A condition which affects a character's effectiveness, either positively or negatively. Common examples include Poison or Haste.
Subtitled Silence is when a character remains silent in a section of dialogue and a subtitle box appears usually having an ellipsis (...) or nothing at all. Most common in J-RPGs and dating sims. The character can also make a small moan or grunt.
Propelling oneself with kinetic usage of limbs while submerged in liquid (or otherwise fluid material).
A transformation is a different stage or form for something. Usually an upgrade.
Device used by games with text boxes to show that a mysterious and/or unknown character is talking. Mostly used in games coming from Japan (at least nowadays).
Vampires are undead, nocturnal creatures that subsist on blood. They have superhuman powers and are sometimes able to shape-shift. They are weak against sunlight, foreign objects stuck in and left in their hearts, decapitation and sometimes holy water and crosses.
