I've been really thinking about this, because as much as I would like to have more team members I'm not neccesarily sure they could be fit in or if they would even be interesting.
The most obvious issue is that of space. Each character has it's own designated are, even Zaheed, and there simply isn't anymore room aboard the Normandy. Certainly they could be placed in an already exsisting room, though really this isn't the main issue with Kasumi already being confirmed as a new addition.
The issue more over is what kind of character it would be and if they would have an interesting background due to limitations.
I think that with Zaheed and Kasumi being human; if a new character was introduced that it would have to be an alien. Mass Effect doesn't make a habit of giving you more than one of each species per game, so based off of that information we can infer that the only avaliable races for a new character would be a Volus, Hanar, Batarian, Vorcha, Elcor, or Varren.
Further analysis points to an elimination of the Hanar, Vorcham, and Elcor as possible candidates. The Hanar are in no way capable of fighting and in no capacity has one ever been shown as a soldier-type, though the real issue here is that don't seem to be capable of operating firearms. This same logic would then apply to the Elcor as well. The Vorcha are simply out of the question based upon their nature. They do not care at all about the Reaper threat and would never stick their neck out to help Shepard.
So, here is why I have left the remaining three races.
Volus:
Volus could definently serve as a Engineer type of charater, and although the Volus are often described as being physically unadapted for combat though I fail to see a reason why. Salarians are scrawny little bastards, but they still seem to be able to keep up with Shepard's pace. Hell, Mordin is technicaly elderly. I would really like to learn more about the Volus. Of the three council races I've mentioned, the Volus seem like the only ones that have any sort of chance at DLC and I would love to see their history and culture in a more detailed scope.
Varren:
I can definetly see Bioware pulling the "Dog Companion" again. At this point it has almost become something of a cliche among western RPGs, although it certainly never stretched the definition of "Dog" very much.
When you talk with the Krogan merchant on Tuchanka I was actually somewhat dissapointed by the fact that you couldn't purchase a Varren, even as a pet. Having a trained Varren on the battlefield would certainly be an interesting change of pace, and unlike anything that ME2 currently has to offer.
Batarian:
I saved this one for last because it seems the most viable. Batarians have already been portrayed as deadly soldiers, and not every single one of them seems to share the racial tensions with Humans that has been portrayed in both ME2 and in Bring Down the Sky. The Batarians are perhaps the one race that has really not gotten much in the way of a detailed background at all. Even the Drell have gotten a pretty fleshed out picture of their history and culture and ME2, and the only other race to not recieve the treatment, the Vorcha, aren't too complex to begin with. Really, what sells it is the idea fo seeing the kind of character interactions that would occur when a Batarian joins a Pro-Human group like Cerebus and has to take orders from Shepard. Maybe all Batarians don't hate humans, but they certainly aren't friends.
Just throwing some ideas out there, seeing what sticks.
