Perhaps I missed something, but what was the significance of Harbinger? I know that he was some sort of Collector leader and that he would take control of troops to make them more powerful, but that's about it. He seemed to be important, yet they didn't flesh him out at all.

He is a ship; he was controlling the collector-leader (the bug you see crawling around with the glowing eyes. You see him release control of said leader and the light died out of the its eyes.

Thanks, was really confused on why this seemingly important antagonist was in a total of like 3 scenes. Makes sense now.

The Indoctrination process reduces the efficiency of whoever is indoctrinated, so the reapers are able to directly control some of the indoctrinated beings.

    Speculation

However it seems that when the link is forcefully broken by someone who isn't the reaper, the reaper becomes very weak. I'm sure that's why Sovereigns Kinetic barriers went down at the end of Mass Effect 1.

Also a harbinger is a sign of things to come.

Actually I dont think so, the collectors were genetically modified by the Reapers and if im not mistaken you kill all of them in the end and there wasnt any other mention of other races being controled by the Reapers so I dont really think Harbinger is a sign or hint for anything in Mass Effect 3.

Harbinger was controlling the Collector's like he controlled Saren, he's just more adept at swapping in and out of bodies. That's probably since the Reapers MADE the Collectors, probably as smaller, easier to hot-swap vessels.

@Mr_Skeleton I'm pretty sure that Shepard in his talk with the Illusive Man says that Harbinger is still out there. He was controlling the Collectors from afar; when the facility was destroyed, he released control of the Collectors, leaving them to die with a final second of freedom. But yes, Harbinger is definitely a reaper and will definitely show up in the next game. For more info...

As mentioned by others, Harbinger is a Reaper like Sovereign.

Except, Sovereigns only example of "Total Control" was Sarens dead body (Remember how Saren was modified before the last battle?).

Harbinger had an entire race, the geneticly modified Proteans, the Collectors as we know them, to exact "total control" on.

Both Reapers used indoctrination, but Harbinger obviously had an easier time since the Collectors have been made to be easily swayed by his powers.

    WAIT.

The Reapers were created by the Collectors, by instructions from the Harbringer. This is how I understood it. And reapers made was made in the form of the organism the reaper was being fed. I don't think Harbringer is a Reaper, I think he is their leader. Or more correctly: Their creator.

Edit: My god, this forum's text editing tool is useless. I can't remove the bold...

No, no, the Reapers are NOT created by the Collectors. Collectors are actually Protheans but Reapers modified them to suite their needs.

The Collectors were only constructing the human Reaper. Harbinger is a Reaper just like the last one, that's their way to reproduce.
