Where do Video Games fit into education?

I am a middle School Social Studies teacher. Where do video games fit into education? Books and movies have been entertaining people for years, and whether people like it or not, they have influenced people in the process. Education although slow has started to embrace this by helping students learn through both books and movies. Those of us who have ever seen the movie Glory in social studies or read Night have learned through watching movies or reading books. Why not video games? When I was a youngling, I feel in love with history through playing Sid Meier’s Civilization. I laugh when I think of how much I learned about history playing that game. What about Total War? I would like to get ideas for video games that could help teach students. Teach them not just history, but show them new ways to experience things that they can’t, growing up in their isolated towns across .
