I did not play the lair dlc, does it add something to ME3 besides backstory? i am only about 3 hours into ME3 and would go back and play lair if it would be beneficial to my play-through.

Nothing, I think there's one line of dialogue that refers to it. Can't say more because spoilers.

Yeah, I keep thinking about going back and playing some of the DLC, since I didn't play any of the ME2 stuff, but I'm already around 16 hours into ME3, so I will probably just not bother for now.

It's interesting to think that because I didn't play that stuff tho, there are things in ME3 that I will never see or hear. Kinda weird honestly.

The outcome of the DLC is part of regular old ME3 no matter what. There's some small differences if you played through the DLC on your imported save, but that's about it.

There are a few things that reference it, like the other DLCs, but not too much.

A humorous reference and maybe access to the terminal in Liara's room.

Just some added pieces of dialogue and a maybe an email or two. Though there's some great dialogue if you take Liara with you to transport the Krogan female from the STG base, which I think might only be said if you completed the LoTSB. I doubt it, but I'm not entirely sure.

There are some lines of dialog particularly when you rescue the female krogan like Abyssfull says. The emails, a little other dialog.... Oh and a dude who will become a war asset. Nothing major but to be honest of all the ME DLC (hell bioware dlc in general) Lair is by far the best.

It's hard for me to say what was added by that dlc and what wasn't. Since all I know is what I've seen in my game I don't know what would or wouldn't be there if I had done things differently. Playing the dlc would, at the very least, make some of the story beats in 3 make a little more sense. Or maybe they wouldn't? When I do a second playthrough I'll be able to see some of the differences.

Both Shadow Broker and Overlord add some story bits, Overlord gets you a gun in Mass Effect 3 also.

It allowed me to make sense of everything related to Liara and the Shadow Broker. If I hadn't played it, I wouldn't know how in the world she got to the point that she's at.

The emotional pay off of the ending of that DLC is brilliant,, and that leads into character arcs Mass Effect 3, though there's not much direct conversational references.
