An empty but engaging taste of what's to come 1

Snake/Big Boss himself.Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes takes place just a few months after the events of Peace Walker, the last previously released game in the series. Two characters prevalent in that game’s events, Paz (presumed dead) and Chico, have been captured and taken to an off-the-books American prison site called Camp Omega. Snake (really Big Boss, since this takes place in the older fiction) receives a distress call from Chico and plans to infiltrate the base, determined to res...

    A Solid Introduction 0

Ground Zeroes is an interesting game. As a bridge between Peacewalker and The Phantom Pain, it doesn't do a great deal of storytelling. In fact, most of the story cutscenes from Ground Zeroes have already been shown in promotional trailers for MGSV proper. It's also very brief - once you know what to do, it's possible to finish the story mission in a scant few minutes. At first glance, it appears that there simply isn't enough content to justify the asking price, but if you're willing to do some...

MGS: Ground Zeroes - A Solid Opener 0

The most jaw-dropping thing about Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is its brevity. Despite all its brilliance, Metal Gear is known most for the cinematic leanings of its creator, Hideo Kojima. It came to a head during Metal Gear Solid 4, which reached amazing highs in gameplay, narrative, and fan-boyish nostalgia, but was laced with overly long interstitials crammed with far too much exposition. From the moment Ground Zeroes opens, things have changed. It’s no more than a few minutes of sc...

    A great demo 0

The first thing to know about this game is that it's really short, that said, there isn't much else that I had a problem with. The AI was interesting, at points it seemed really smart, following me to hiding spots and flushing me out. There were also spots where I assume the AI couldn't reach so I would just be completely ignored while sniping NPCs all over the map.The story was pretty good, maybe a bit confusing, felt like it was pulled out of the middle of another game. This is the first Metal G...

It's not the size of the boat... 0

Ground Zeroes is an odd little quasi-preview for MGSV proper, which provides one real story mission (which will last around 2 hours at most), as well as some fun side missions and extra audio tapes and such, serving as the sort of Tanker chapter to Phantom Pain’s Plant chapter. The missions themselves are very enjoyable, particularly the main story mission, the extras are fun and the visuals are fantastic. It’s the reimagined Metal Gear gameplay that steals the show here though, the ...

Only as brief as you allow it to be 0

What is essentially a playable teaser for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain gets a ton of stuff right. It serves as a transition for experienced MGS players to the new control scheme; shows newbies to the franchise what 5 is gonna be like; and gets you unreasonably excited for the full game. The controls are close to perfect, I was using a 360 controller on the PC. It looks incredible, especially the rain-soaked main mission.Once you play through that main story mission - probably an hour or ...

A Short But Explosive Prelude to Greatness 1

When it comes to the world of video games, few names command as much respect and curiosity as Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid series. Known for its intricate narratives, complex characters, and groundbreaking gameplay, this franchise has garnered a cult-like following over the years. With the release of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes for the PlayStation 4, Kojima Productions gave fans a tantalising taste of what was to come in the highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Grou...
