Born Dante Terrell Smith out of the Brooklyn, New York area, Mos Def is both critically and commercially successful as an emcee and as an actor. He began his hip-hop career as a member of the Native Tongue Posse and also did a few guest appearances with Da Bush Babies and De La Soul. He enjoyed the most commercial success in the late 90's as half of the hip-hop duo known as Black Star along with his partner Talib Kweli. Mos went on to release his debut album as a solo artist, Black on Both Sides. The album was well recieved by critics many calling it a classic shortly after its release. Since then Mos Def has come out with the album The New Danger which earned him a Grammy nomination for the song "Ghetto Rock" and True Magic which earned him another nomination for the song "Undeniable". He is currently working on his fourth solo album named 'The Ecstatic' due this summer.
