Most of the games in the series are some sort of fighting game, although there are some exceptions. The series was exclusive to Sony consoles up until the 2010 release "Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2".

In addition to the regular Ultimate Ninja games, there are two sub-series: Ultimate Ninja Heroes, which appeared on the PSP, and Ultimate Ninja Storm, which appear on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. In Japan, the three Shippuden Ultimate Ninja games prior to UNS2 (Ultimate Ninja 4, Ultimate Ninja 5, and Ultimate Ninja Heroes 3) were released as Narutimate Accel 1, 2, and 3, respectively.

Ultimate Ninja 5 is thus far the only entry to the series to never be released in the United States.
