Zergs Up, Terrans Down In The Next StarCraft Balance Patch

Also, don't expect that Zerg expansion anytime soon.

Blizzard has gotten into the strange habit of dropping news about significant balance changes to StarCraft II well before the patch containing those changes is actually available. I assume that's at least partially in response to the very vocal complaining that's been happening over on Team Liquid and elsewhere about the game's balance, especially the perceived disadvantage of the Zerg matchup against Terrans. A Zerg player did just upset the finals of the GomTV StarCraft League, but I think that was mostly due to the winner being really damn good at StarCraft.

Well, hey, it's time for the Zerg to get their due. Blizzard has detailed some of the balance changes coming in the next SC2 update, which is pretty much a big boon to the Zerg and another undignified slap across the face for Terrans. Quoth Dustin Browder:
== TEASER ==
  • We're increasing roach range. This will allow roaches to be more effective in large groups, giving the zerg more options in the mid to end game.
  • Fungal Growth will now prevent Blink, which will give zerg a way to stop endlessly Blinking stalkers which can be very challenging to deal with in large numbers.
  • The Barracks are going to require a Supply Depot, which will impact a lot of early terran reaper pushes.
  • The reaper speed upgrade will require the Factory, which is meant to weaken a lot of the early terran reaper attacks that dominate so many matches, especially in team games.
  • We're making a number of increases to the health of zerg buildings, which will make the very vulnerable zerg technology structures more resistant to raids.  We don't expect these hit point changes to have a super significant impact on the game, but the current numbers felt way too low.

There's not much in these notes that's relevant to my beloved Protoss, though that small nerf to stalkers sounds kind of troublesome. Infestors are going to become more and more important to high-level Zerg play as the game evolves; I know I've been seeing a lot more of them in my division lately, anyway.

Then again, I've barely had time to keep up with StarCraft II over the last couple of weeks, and here's the dismal proof of how quickly your skills atrophy when you take some time off from a game as demanding as this.

In related news, balance updates are all you should expect for StarCraft II anytime soon. Blizzard's Greg Canessa just mentioned over at GDC Online in Austin that the Zerg expansion Heart of the Swarm is still a good 18 months away. Hey serious StarCraft players (I know you're out there), what kind of changes do you want to see in the multiplayer game before then?
