The recent DSi firmware slipped in anti-piracy measures that made it impossible to run R4-style carts. Days later, the firmware already appears to be cracked.

In this clip, the R4i appears to be apparently running on the latest DSi firmware, 1.4. That was quick! If this is true, don't worry Nintendo, there's always firmware 1.5.

No, it won't. You know why? Once you release something to the public, the public then has full access to your software. No matter what protections you put on it, people can crack it at an Assembly level (the same way game ROMs get hacked from JP to EN).

Edit: I removed calling the crackers pirates since a cracker and a pirate are not synonymous.

No. And this has been obvious for many, many years now.  And still people try, only alienating paying customers in the process.

I don't have a R4 card, but that last point is exactly one of 2 reasons I would get one, the other being to copy games I aready own, for increased save files (single save file games specifically).

That certainly has put me off PC games.  I never pirated a game or had one, but when I see restrictions that make playing a chore, I look elsewhere - consoles.
