So I'd like to have a place where we can dissect videos and other information that we've received so far. I have been coming up with my own theories as to what this game will be, and I'd love to hear everyone else's.

In this video I wildly speculated the following:

In the opening scene the player is on a space station of some sort. It looked very sparse, and they didn't show anything behind the player, perhaps there is nothing there... Space stations might just be User interfaces (UIs) and not have anything to explore in them.

The player also get's automatically flown out of the station before being given control, possibly docking is automatic as well (which seems to be the case when they land at the planet 'trading center' as well)

The upper left corner of the screen says Ethaedair up until the point where he enters the atmosphere of the first planet where it changes to Achaia. Both of these names seem randomly generated to me, possibly through an algorithm that produces roughly say-able English text.

There is a lot of higher definition detail pop-in on the planet. This seems to be limited to shadows, objects and some of the more localized surface roughness.

When the player flies up to what i'm calling a trading center on the planet it highlights a landing pad in red, and the player is able to cycle to the next pad without pointing towards it and apparently activate an auto landing sequence.

Shortly after landing and getting out (is getting out necessary?) the UI pops up with -3.2 Heridium, most likely some mined/produced resource. Why didn't the player have to select what to sell? Possibilities are; This is a demo and it was set up to be snappier than the real game, this station only takes Heridium, the player had previously labeled this Heridium as extra or excess, Heridium and presumably other materials are only worth anything traded in, or Heridium was everything on the ship and exiting the ship denotes "unload everything" to a trade station.

The player walks around for quite a while on the trading station, enough time for several other ships to come and go. Was there a UI interface question that wasn't being shown or does it just take a while for a player to make trades?

When the player interacts with what seems to be the warp UI Ethaedair says it was discovered by Hellogames-ryan, which is different than the name of who discovered the planet that was landed on. Possible to not discover everything in a system when you visit it?

I have no idea what spectral type means or what G2m could mean as a type. Any suggestions?

Does the space station section of the info screen imply that every area has 0-1 space stations and they can vary in set ways? I kind of hope that each class I space station is slightly different based on what resources are around it and it's not just that there are like 4 different stock stations that are either class I II III or IV. But we'll have to see.

The player then does something that I assume only gamedevs can do which looks super snazzy and swoopy, and finds an unconnected system to warp to, Utwarzers.

There is a big pyramid looking... space port? Maybe they do all look different, who knows.

Vesta Prime: This planet actually has life on it as well as strange blue.. probably mining patches. It also has glowing blue circles, which I'm assuming are points of interest. Also, even on the planet you can see the large red blip on the map that represents the assumed space station.

It seems that overall the life on the planet ignores the player, although near the end, the large two legged creature might take a look at the player.

    What did I miss?

Nice analysis. It would be disappointing if none of the structures could be entered.

I just realized! The frame the video is stopped on seems to show the same ice planet with the crashed frigate as the one in the reveal trailer.

I really wonder what the space police and robots are in the world, and how often space battles happen. What do AI ships really do?

    My responses to your points:

The pop-in was extremely noticeable this time. I didn't ever remember seeing it in the older trailers, but upon going back and looking more carefully it is definitely there - just easy to look over at a first glance. It will be interesting to see what the pop-in is like on PC, given that all the footage they have shown so far is on PS4. Sean talked about what they could do with more powerful hardware, and assuming this is also coming out on PC (it is right?) increased distance for the procedural generation might really help with the pop-in on the finer details. It's very stylised though, so I think they've put effort in to masking it. Must be a big issue.

I don't think it was a trading post necessarily, just a landing pad. The -3.2 Heredium could be representing the fuel usage to reach that location, as I seem to think that came up again another time the ship landed somewhere else? That or it could be trading, but maybe it was the result of a trade happening elsewhere that was set up some time prior. (There is another occasion where it comes up with + some resource too).

With regards to not discovering everything in a system when you visit it, that seems accurate. In the older trailers the player had looked at a species of animal and it gave the new species discovered pop-up. I think to "discover" something you have to be the first player to observe it. So first the planet will be discovered, then any locations of interest on the planet, followed by different species of animal discovered on the planet. All of those could be found by different players, and one player will almost certainly not be able to discover everything on a planet, if I had to guess.

Spectral type and G2m sound like they are referring to the class of star. Check this link for more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stellar_classification#Class_G For reference, the Sun is spectral type G2V.

@beachthunder: @bollard: thanks! I hadn't thought about real star classifications, that is most likely what it is.

I hope the -3.2 wasn't fuel, I'd rather fuel be draining while in flight... Although I'm not sure what would happen if you ran out of fuel while flying.

I hope the pop-in gets better with future updates.

Disappointment is very possible. Hopefully the gameplay is solid. Then everyone can complain about the lack of meaningful content despite playing it for hours and hours. (Destiny)

@wargarbler: If it was fuel I think it would be a reminder just to let you know how much you had used getting there, I doubt it'd only take fuel when you landed. But who knows!

That's the type of star. There are different type of stars (like Blue Giants and Red Dwarfs and our sun being somewhere in the middle of it).

The pop-in was the generating of content; it gets more refined the closer you get to something. But I'm with you guys; really hope they can increase the radius or make it fade in instead of pop.

The first name you saw was the name of the sun or solar system, when he approaches the planet you see the name of the planet.

Space ports will differ in look and size (they also differ in what you can buy and sell).

I hope there's more to explore within the space port; the fact that the player can get out of the ship and walk around must mean that there is more there.

I have no idea about the resources and stuff; seems like there is indeed some UI stuff missing.

If this game has one meaningful mechanic I think I'll be in. I'm not feeling Shoemaker's tri-corder simulator and I'm not interested in narrative or lore gathering but any sort of survival, resource gathering, or satisfying combat system could totally hook me into this. I just want it to have some sort of challenge or struggle on a gameplay level.

Also, if the popup only occurs when in flight I think I could totally suspend my disbelief into it being some weird cockpit HUD.

Also also, No Man's Sky is still a super great title.

I think one thing is for certain about No Man's Sky: there is going to be something interesting at the center of the galaxy. I can't begin speculating, but I imagine Sean and company have something great planned.

I think the Heridium is fuel as it says +7 point something before you take off from the station. When he landed on that trade post thing it looked like there was an interior with a glowing rotating cube thing (probably takes you to the trading screen). I don't know what the +1357 units thing is but it may be the currency. This may mean automatically selling cargo and the glowing rotating cube thing takes you to a screen to buy stuff. They probably did not want to show that yet. I was disappointed that they did not show the combat in the game. This is ripped from the No Mans Sky official site.

    Survive on a dangerous frontier

Every solar system, planet, ocean and cave is filled with danger, and you are vulnerable.

Your ship and suit are fragile, and every encounter can test your skills to the limit. From dogfighting in space to firstperson combat on a planet’s surface, you will face foes ready to overwhelm you.

And one mistake could see you lose everything. In No Man’s Sky, every victory and every defeat has lasting consequences.

    Build for an epic journey

Whether you want to explore and see things never before discovered, or directly set course for the centre of the galaxy, how you play No Man’s Sky is up to you.

But you cannot take your voyage lightly. You’ll need to prepare.

Collect precious resources on the surfaces of planets and trade them for the ships, suits and equipment that will take you to your destiny in the stars.

I'm assuming that the other ships that came and went to the trading port or whatever are actually part of the player's fleet, which is why they just come, unload, and go giving the player plus monies in the process. Anyone else feeling that?

the pop in is less pop in and more generating the world. Watch the 30 min Gameinformer video. Sean shows the "generator" at work there. He speeds up in the dev cam and basically outpaces the generation (which you can't do in a ship ingame). It also gives some info on portals.

And I was just about to post the same link as Bollard in response to the spectral type. It's the type of Planet or Star or whatever.

I kind of agree with Brad on this one. I'd like there to be deeper mechanics, but if this is just me walking around discovering things and scanning plants I'd be so happy.

@hugh_jazz: I'm not sure they are part of his fleet, but they may work for the player.. maybe a factions or reputation or even a purchasing agreement kind of thing. I think they were flying too far away. Some of the ships also didn't look space worthy (and I hope that matters :p ).

If objects are popping in right in front of me while I'm playing the game, at that point I'm not going to care why it's happening. It is a major technical problem that they are going to need to fix before release if I'm going to buy No Man's Sky.

I wish I had that level of self control (i'll probably buy it instantly).. Watching the video posted by @sogeman the pop-in seemed more than fine. Maybe certain planets are worse than others at the moment. Hopefully they can get it tightened up before release.

I am excited for this game and would like to play it. In all the videos I've seen though I've never seen a player interact with anything. I would be happy if they put a video of someone just farming material. I would be even more happy if they put out a video of someone shooting anything moving.

call me a sucker i guess, i'm still super pumped about this and can't be negative towards it at all. the ambition itself is laudable, in an industry that's starting to be afraid of taking chances. these are the kinds of games i dreamt of when i was a kid.

@wargarbler: well they should just update the seed and generation algorithms and everyone's world would react the same. Like a minecraft seed. What I wonder is if you can destroy something and it would propagate to other users universes or if it at least saved in your copy of the game.

@mb: at walking speed it doesn't seem like you'll see it that much. Just when you go by ship and slightly outpace the generator.

@sogeman: That's something I've been wondering about too and if I understand the tech then there's no way any 'destruction' caused by the player will be recorded somehow, because when you run away from the place and come back it will be reconstructed as before. But I might be wrong.

Same goes for creatures; if they spawn according to some formula and I kill some and go back to that place, will the creatures be there again?

@bofooq : I'm certain there was a video of the player shooting some robot with a lasergun-thing. Also seen some space combat. But I kind of agree that they should just show a 10 minute or so playthrough with some more of those gameplay elements they've been talking about.

It won't be fixed. That's how Minecraft still is. I think it comes with the territory of randomly generating that much content. I think in 20 years it'll be fixed but there's no way a PS4 or even a current beefy PC would be able to generate fast enough for you not to see it.

@dussck: @sogeman: I wish I could remember where I heard it, but I'm pretty sure I heard Sean Murray say something to the effect that killing an animal wont be shared, but larger more climactic events would be uploaded to the server (maybe in Danny O'Dwyer's coverage earlier this year?). He mentioned significantly altering terrain would be shared but I'm not even sure at this point if that's possible. There are 'police' that get angry if you fight a space station... can you destroy space stations, do they rebuild, or just show back up if you go far enough away.

From watching this, I think I have a good idea of what the game will end up being. It will be small in scope (literal geographic (astronomical?) scope aside). I expect to run around, shoot some outposts, gather some materials, maybe build some things, and be treated to a pleasant art style. That's good enough. I actually really dig the art style. Anything more than that is just bonus.

@wargarbler: You can't totally destroy space stations, but you can 'damage' them, which results in lowering it's rating and what you can buy there (for everyone). It'll also alert the space police and killing them gives you 'Units' (money). But they'll remember and you'll be a target every time you'll come by.

From everything I've seen, I really want this game to be well received. I really like Sean; he just seems like a super chill, humble guy who is also cleverer than he takes credit for...I really would like to just hang out and be friends with him.

Honestly, the most tragic thing about this game would be if the toxic cesspool of the internet destroyed Hello Games adventurous spirit and willingness to take big risks and be ambitious.

I was a victim of the Spore hype train, so much so that I convinced myself that I liked the game more than I did while I was playing it...

Which is why I can't get excited over No Man's Sky, although I do hope that they stick the landing on this one.
