Just wanted to clarify that in NMS we are heading to the centre of the universe. There are multiple galaxies that we will come across along the way.... image from UK retail PS4 release.

Our Galaxy, Milky Way, Loads of Galaxies .... UNIVERSE!

I think I replied to you directly in another thread already, but for others who don't know, Murray clarified that there is a distinction between universe and galaxy, and that the game takes place in a universe full of galaxies. The initial goal is to get to the center of the galaxy, but the true goal is likely to get to the center of the universe. Hello Games probably anticipates most players will stop after the 30+ hours it takes to get to the center of the universe, though, so the messaging has largely focused on galaxy vs. universe. Here's a video that references the quote from the GI interview in which he makes this distinction:

You are letting your imagination get caught up in marketing hype, speculation, and word games. I'll spoiler block this in case you don't know what happens when you get to the center of the galaxy. This is how the game works. At any given instant in the game universe there is only one galaxy. You cannot fly at will between multiple galaxies. When you get to the center of the galaxy you are playing you are given the choice of staying in that galaxy or going to a new one. If you go to a new one all that happens is it you start the game over. The game universe is replaced by a new galaxy.

All a "new galaxy" means for NMS is that they generate stuff from a different seed number. So in a sense you can say that NMS has infinite galaxies because there are infinite numbers. But at any given time while you are playing there is only one galaxy, the one you are in. From this you should be able to understand why Sean Murray uses the terms "galaxy" and "universe" interchangeably. This isn't reality people. It is a game. This game is not to find the galaxy that is (miraculously) at the center of the universe and then fly to the center of that. It is fly to the center of a galaxy, rinse, repeat.

The centre of the universe is actually Chapter 3 of MGSV.

So the back cover says 1 player only? Guess that puts that whole thing to bed. Seems kind of weird after they talked up the possibility of running into other players.

I have to wonder that during development they had a desire to have instances of players bumping into each in this vast universe. This is a complete guess but maybe they had trouble merging the concepts of bumping into another player and having the game be set in a world so large it seems endless.

Looks like they might have settled on having the possibility of people meeting each other be there but since the chance of it happening are like a fraction of a percent they called the game single player.

    Just my 2 cents

@colourful_hippie: that info still needs to be accurate on the box, even if online play has a small chance of taking place. I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure the esrb/retailers would be pissed if there was false info on the box.

How exactly would one determine the centre of something unless its limits were known?

The centre is where the multiplayer is.

10 hours in, 15 times warped and went through 2 black holes. Still not much closer to the center.

Can't wait to get there, though! :)

Based on the quick look, it looks like they straight up tell you the distance to the center of the galaxy. Every time you warp it'll just knock a tiny chunk off that big number until you eventually get there.

So. My question is one of time. If the center is like Hundreds of Thousands of light years away, if you get there and then return to your starting planet. Will it look different due to the passage of time with erosion and whatnot?
