Overview
A pancake is a round cake that is prepared using flour, salt, sugar, eggs, milk, and a leavening agent such as baking soda or baking powder. Pancakes obtain their signature fluffy texture through a chemical reaction between the leavening agent and an acid like buttermilk. Once prepared, the batter is poured onto a heated surface, generally a griddle, but a frying pan can even be used. By region, pancakes can differ, such as a smaller pancake is sometimes referred to as a 'silver dollar' pancake. It is important to note that a crêpe is not classified as a pancake since it does not contain a leavening agent.
Pancakes are also generally topped with butter and syrup. However, different types of fruit, sugar, and whipped toppings can also be applied to pancakes.
McDonalds pancakes are referred to as "Hotcakes"; a portmanteau of the words "hot" and "pancakes". Other common synonyms for pancakes are 'flapjacks' and 'griddle cakes'.
