I've been almost strictly Mac for 6 years now but I'm interested again in building a gaming PC.

I will mostly play Starcraft 2, WoW, maybe Civ 5, nothing too hardcore.

Here is what I have compiled on Newegg.  I guess my biggest questions are:

    1.  Any major incompatibilities that I have?
    2.  Need some recommendations on the video card.  Is that a good one?

@filmfanatic24:  No major incompatibilities, and that video card will definitely run Blizzard games and Civ 5 on high. Won't play stuff like Crysis and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. perfectly but you can always upgrade.

You need a case though. Also a basic DVD burner drive.

@Hunkulese: Thanks.  Guess I should have clarified:  I don't really want to spend more that $1000 for the guts of it.  I took a look at the sticky page about builds in the different price levels but really want the i5 instead of an AMD chip.

@salad10203: Holy cow, that is cheap compared to Newegg.  Thanks for the tip!

I already have a case from an old PC I built a long time ago (should work, right?) and a DVD drive, so I'm set there.

If you want an easy and inexpensive alternative, todays woot is pretty good. But I guess you probably want to build it yourself.

For my purposes do I NEED an i7 or will an i5 be plenty?  Looks like even the i5 at Microcenter is $30 cheaper than Newegg.

Make sure the case you have is the same as the MOBO you get.  Most are Mid atx, but some are full ATX, micro ATX ,or even rarer is one called BTX

@salad10203: If it's an old case is there a way to confirm what kind of MOBO it will hold?  Or will my old board say on it somewhere what type it is? (I haven't opened it in quite some time)

Go for a gtx460 1gb instead. The hd5770 will be good enough, however at least the gtx460 will last you longer, also it overclocks really well.

So by upgrading the GPU to the GTX 460 is it ok to save $30 and go for the i5?  Like I said earlier, I'm not going to be playing stuff like Crysis , just want to be able to play WoW and Starcraft on highest settings.

Also, after looking on newegg, is there a difference who I buy the GTX 460 from?  Gigabyte ok?

I think I'm ready to start buying stuff, just need to make up my mind on the GPU.

    GTX 460 for $229

    or

    Radeon HD 5770 for $140

I know that the GTX 460 will give me a lot better to go forward with, but is the 5700 going to bottleneck me for WoW or SC2 at all?

@filmfanatic24: the most important question you need to ask yourself is, are you willing to pay a little bit extra? If yes, then absolutely go with GeForce 460. If not, stick to 5770.

As far as I know, 5770 will play WoW and SC 2 absolutely fine. No problems at all. However, if you want to play Crysis, Crysis 2 and other games set to release next year, you are better off spending a little extra now.

My advice, always try to buy the latest generation of cards, even though you are buying sort of mid range cards, and 460 is a fantastic
card if the reviews are anything to go by.
