And on the back of the power supply a red light is turned on and when I try to turn it on it makes a little zap type electrical noise, I'm going to guess it's broken, any help would be awesome, thanks.

Is this a custom machine or an OEM machine? Did anything happen before it died (Lost power, spilled something, etc)?

motherboards usually have an led light that tells you if there is power going through, check to see if it's on.  If it's not then yah you have a power supply problem.

It may be worth checking to see if he has a power supply you can test with. Its really the easiest way to see whats the problem.  If it turns on with the power supply it is most likely the power supply if it doesn't it is a motherboard issue or could be both.

I'm going to say take out the 8800GT and try turning it on again. The power supply might be getting overloaded and forcing itself off as a safety precaution, similarly to how overheating cars will ideally stall instead of cracking the engine block.

If the computer works with the 8800GT taken out, I would recommend you getting a more powerful power supply. the 8800GT will run fine with a 550 or 600 watt power supply unit.

It's a 700 watt : (, plus it had always worked fine for over a year and a half now.

    Is it pluggged in?

    Just Kidding.

Anyways, seems like you need to buy a new one to replace your old one. It's not that hard, just keep track of all the places that need power.

If you hear electrical noises at the back of your psu, maybe it's not a good idea to use that psu? I don't know, it might kill you, or cause a fire. Just buy another cheaper psu and be done with it.

It may be still underwarranty. My PSU has a five year warranty.

If you see any smoke coming out of the PSU it's the power supply. Take out the 8800GT and unplug anything else you don't need to test. If it turns on it's the power supply. If not it could be the motherboard.

if you see a red light on the motherboard odds are it's telling you there isn't adequate power. Try looking in your motherboard manual for info on the red light. You can also search your motherboard model number online and find out what the light means.

For a new power supply head on over to newegg.com or any other website. Make sure it has at least 4 +12v rails @20 amps each under specifications. If it does not have at least FOUR +12v rails at 20 amps do NOT buy it, not worth the money. This is crucial to having a health power supply that will last you at least 3 years. I recommend the Zalmann brand 750 watts. A bit pricey but worth every penny.

I hope it didn't take out your videocard like it did to mine. Besides that please help me out by:

There also could be a component that is non-functional but the power supply is still trying to put power into it. I remember when a few of my fans were no longer running (they were a set of the shoddy LED lit ones) the system would try to start up and then just stop. But the motherboard had a set of lights that indicated what the problem was. But first see if it's your PSU and then just check for faulty components that need power.

Also, doing all of this is still cheaper than buying a fucking Mac.

Yep, pull that PSU.  It's fried.

Might I suggest a corsair as a replacement, they make some excelent units.
