I'm torn. I could afford both, but which is worth my time? I'm a huge fan of Final Fantasy Tactics and I'm a sucker for science-fiction titles. Help?

Vagrant Story all the way.  Even if you liked Xenogears there's only half a game there.

I wish I played Vagrant Story back when it's innovative and seen as one of the best JRPG's around.. this was made much earlier for people in Europe, so I've had it on my games list for ages, but still just can't bring myself to get through it all =/

If it's because you're having a hard time, then you should know that the most important weapon statistics are the damage types (blunt, edged, piercing), followed by affinity (human, dragon, phantom, etc.).  Elemental attributes are of very little importance, and shouldn't even be considered when deciding what weapon to hit a dude with. "

Thanks for the tip, but no I mean with how dated it's become. Especially with the controls; using L2+R2 to control the camera, circle as the action button the clunky platforming-ish.. I didn't stand a chance! Even when I got accustomed to it, since I still gave it abouts an hour's worth of a chance, I still found it tough to motivate myself to carry on. "

Afford? You can probably get those games for like a dollar. Or the cost of a CD-R.

Vagrant story is the better game, with the caveat, if you don't mind checking up on gamefaqs for a little pre-reading. The story is interesting, unlike Xenogears, and the battle mechanics are more refined yet action oriented.

As much as I love my Vagrant Story, Xenogears takes it.

Vagrant Story is the only thing you typed in the title. 
 
Well, that's all I saw in the title.  It's the only thing that matters.  Why? 
 
That's because Vagrant Story is the greatest video game ever created.  Period.  End of story.  No arguing necessary.

Sorry bro, even if I didn't hate Toriyama's art, I'd probably still prefer Cross. I also like FF8 more than FF7, in case anyone would like to tell me how wrong that is as well.  And in the context of my comment, Chrono Cross is more contemporary to the games mentioned in the first place. "

No matter how much you twist and turn it, Xenogears is just more fun to play. 
 
Vagrant Story drowns in its gameplay mechanics without having the characters or story to back it up. Very, very much like Final Fantasy XII, its inofficial successor.
 
So, have you played FF XII? If you liked that, get Vagrant Story. If you didn't, stay away from Vagrant Story. Its that simple.
