Saints Row: The Third worked out of the box.

Skyrim did not. Shit, it still doesn't for a lot of people. A game as busted as that should immediately be disqualified from any GoTY talk. It doesn't even belong on the list. I'm not even going to finish the podcast if that's the endgame.

Dude, I don't think you are supposed to take it THAT seriously. Listen and enjoy the content, if you disagree then super but ignoring it won't make it go away and it's still an enjoyable listen even if you disagree.

Ryan's Saints Row betrayal was the greatest plot twist of 2011. Probably the best Bombcast I've ever listened to. Skyrim and Saints Row are both incredible and I'm glad it came down to them. You should play Saints Row. And you should play Skyrim.

Great job, guys.

Brad lied, Saints Row died (to 2nd place)

Posted by Winternet

What an amazing podcast. Ryan's betraying his own best game of the year was great.

1st victory to Brad, right? Good to him. I thought he was going to crack but he kept it strong.

@DigitalRichard: That's not a word, brotato.

Posted by bwheeeler

I think that the real lesson here is combined Game of the Year lists are essentially meaningless and absolutely not important.

Posted by DCam

Was NOT expecting Vinny to end up on Saints Row: The Third: The Team.

I fucking hate brad. He has such a stick up his ass.
((I've actually always hated brad, but man he threw a fucking tantrum.))

GiantBomb GOTY: Brad gets what he wants or everyone looses their fucking minds.

You must be a new member. Brad liked Metal Gear Solid 4 in GOTY 2008. Grand Theft Auto 4 won. Brad liked Red Dead Redemption in GOTY 2010. Mass Effect 2 won. I don't understand why everyone hates Brad. In my opinion, he put up good arguments about his case.

it's the way he puts up the argument, he was throwing a tantrum and lying. Apparently Brad has magically never encountered anything bad about skyrim. Even Jeff came like one step from just calling Brad a liar.

Skyrim and saint's row the third... lov'em both, both are my game of the year.

and yeah, pk has become a real giantbomb editor now. Once you go through a GOTY pick, you can never leave.

Happy New Year all of Giantbomb!

Edited by Make_Me_Mad

Listening to Brad argue in these is always infuriating, so I'll pass. I don't want another worse version of his Minerva's Den whining from last year.

Edit: And don't take this as me disliking Brad. I respect the hell out of him, and the sheer fact that he followed the crew here to Giant Bomb puts him head and shoulders over people I actually know in real life, as far as admiration goes. I just hate to hear him arguing, because he does it poorly, and honestly seems disingenuous and outright petty and bitter. It's depressing to go through.

I agree with Jeff's contest against Skyrim and I don't think Skyrim should be GOTY because it is a broken game.

Edited by arcn

As someone who feels cheated out of my money because I can no longer play the PS3 version of Skyrim for more than 5 minutes without it crashing my console to hell, I gotta say I'm pretty glad that they made it a point to disqualify it from receiving any kind of award, I'm not sure if a lot of other sites are doing it but at least Giantbomb did it so that's good enough for me.

I also agree with what Jeff said about QA and giving this game more time, sorry but "it's a huge world come onn" doesn't cut it anymore, this isn't a small developer working on an overly ambitious project, this a major developer that sells millions upon millions of copies every time it releases a game. I find it hard to believe that a company with those kinds of resources can't release a product or a patch that isn't broken, and if for some reason they can't then it's their responsibility to delay the game until it's in a reasonable working condition.

Ultimately I think Saints Row probably should have won, once you get used to the amazing parts of Skyrim, the flaws really start to set in, the writing feels down right lazy in certain spots for example, "thank you for saving us, please become our leader now for no logical reason at all, even though there are half a dozen people more qualified than you, oh and by leader we mean person who does fetch quests for us". The leveling system in that game is also really horrible, but it's horrible in a way that you don't notice till the higher levels, I shouldn't have to stab Shadowmere with a two handed sword for an hour so I can get a few more perks or try to figure out ways to tediously grind the rest of the Alchemy and Pickpocket skills, this isn't what I would consider fun or enjoyable in any way shape or form.

Brad got ripped apart! And for good reason let's be honest...

4 hours!!!!!!!

Posted by bkbroiler

I think they all had great points about why Skyrim and SR3 shouldn't be game of the year. Skyrim has a ton of content but a lot of it (and the combat and dialog) is kind of just okay. SR3 is crazy and ridiculous, but it's basically like playing GTA3, and the side missions are boring and repetitive. AKA Game of the Year should go to Portal 2, a game I played a ton of but can not find a part to pick apart.

I thought this was the best podcast all year. I love the way they wittled the GOTY list down to ten, and then down to top 5, and then GOTY. Great stuff.

Posted by Potter9156

Surprised Jeff/Vinny didn't bring up just how bad the loot and dungeon designs are in Skyrim.

Posted by ez123

It seems like Brad does care about getting the desired outcome more than being truthful but whatever, it's not malicious(and I think it's mostly listenable). He wants his favorite stuff to win. The fact that 3/5 people had Saints Row 3 as their GOTY and Skyrim still won isn't his fault, it's just how things turned out.

Or it's Ryan's fault.

Either way, thanks guys <>

i fucking hate brad.

he got asked whats better about skyrim then oblivion. and he said they done it. be more specific brad. so fucking tired of that guy and how he defends himself. so incredibly stupid fucking lame.

also brad have said he hasnt touch skyrim since after his revieq process. ans has only played 30 hours. fucking liar. last thing i will ever see, hear or read about brad

What? You can beat it in a single weekend and there is zero reason whatsoever to go back. The writing tries way too hard to be funny. The puzzles are far too easy. Portal 2 has way too many issues and doesn't even belong in the top 10.

Edited by I_smell

I am dieing to jump in on this final GOTY conversation and give my  points about the last 2 games.

I came to comment on Patrick's saying that The Last Crusade was tiring (not completely seriously) and I read people talking about Brad pulling another Minerva's Den... this is gonna be a bumpy ride.

I beat that game in about 5 sittings. I know I spent more than 10 hours on it. That is long enough for me, and I don't think any of that time was not absolutely worth it, something you can't say about either of the top two. The writing is absolutely fantastic, and if you found it trying to hard, well, you can't please everyone. I'm not saying I expected it to win, but I found my clear choice when they were arguing over the top two!

On, and the people shitting on Brad should just quit it. He argued his point fine, and I think they are right to pick Skyrim over Saints Row 3 when it comes down to it. I wish Patrick wouldn't argue by attacking people personally, though.

Posted by SomeDeliCook

I don't think Saints Row is my GOTY (its in the top 10 for sure) but I am definitely disappointed Skyrim beat it.

Posted by PrioritySeven

I didn't think people would get this irate about a GOTY pick from the Bombcast. Relax fellas, it's not the end of the world!

And a pretty sweet week of videos/podcasts, thanks Bombcast!

Posted by falling_fast

I for one am thrilled about it being Saints Row the third vs Skyrim. those would be my picks for the two best games of the year as well. which one is better is probably a matter of taste (the answer is Skyrim, though :P)

Posted by akumous

Bethesda has been making the same game for over a decade but with subtle improvements to the formula. If I want an exploration experience then Skyrim is probably the game for me but as an RPG Skyrim fail on so many levels. Additionally, as a game, plagued with so many bugs and some that are platform breaking , Skyrim doesn't deserve game of the year because the bugs undermined the experience. That's my point of few and I know many will contest it but that's how I see it.

Posted by dOm_CaTz

I feel like if ryan backed saints row it would have won, instead he just bowed out=[. It doesn't matter because saints row was/is the giant bomb goty. Crossing my fingers on that "arrow to the knee" dlc for saints row tho.

Posted by Helios1337

After listening to some of this I'm definitely going to give Saints Row: The Third a try even though I didn't like the first Saints row because Vinny and Jeff made a some great points. Skyrim, is still low on the list to play because I'm not a big generic fantasy genre fan, the melee combat looks broken to me, and stuff like this doesn't convince me otherwise:

Vinny asks, "What's groundbreaking about Skyrim that is not iterative?" Brad replies "They did it, they got it right "

Posted by Tarsier

patrick : catherine has a bad ending

as if there arent 8 different endings... like the one he got is the only one.

Skyrim has kind of bland writing.  Seriously, put in New Vegas again and tell me it doesn't have more interesting player choice and characters.  It's night and day.  Skyrim literally has text boxes with one response.  The more I played Skyrim the more I felt like they were stretching themselves thin.

I like it and played a ton of it, but a year from now I bet that I won't be able to remember any of it.

Posted by Antihippy

@Henrikhoe: He played 60 hours.

Posted by toadstule

Vinny's analogy about how Skyrim is like "having a buddy to talk to" and Saint's Row is something you want to "fuck the shit out of" is absolutely amazing.

Posted by Death_Burnout

Yeah seriously, fuck y'all for hating on Brad, he fought valiantly for Skyrim. All the points made by both Brad and Patrick were sound, but so were some of the points Jeff made. It was a really really good argument.

I laughed a lot, this whole thing was a really nice lighthearted debate that i thoroughly enjoyed. I am shocked Ryan was on board for Skyrim though, but it made total sense to me. Saints Row simply does not have enough in it compared to its predecessors, and like Brad said, all of the best parts are the parts you don't play. That's not actually what he said, I dunno, it's 3:31 am but you get what I mean.

I do feel like driving home the point that a lot of the stuff in Saints Row the Third is straight up from Saints Row 1, and I'm super surprised and glad Jeff mentioned that there used to be a way to replay any mission too...like c'mon that's straight up disappointing that that's not in there anymore. Also, dumb thing; Dual wielding used to be a separate weapon choice...in this game it's a stupid ability you can't turn off. That shit is straight up dumb.

I had the same feeling about the writing and player choice (within the actual stories) in Skyrim. Elder Scrolls games have never really been about plotline-altering choices though, while Fallout games always have been. And on top of that, Obsidian is known for being a great group of writers that makes middling games, while Todd Howard's crew at Bethesda is kind of the exact opposite. Maybe Obsidian will make The Elder Scrolls: New Elsweyr in 2 or 3 years and we'll get all the fun writing and terrible programming that we loved so much in Vegas.

I got heated too listening this.. FUCK RAYMAN! And Fuck Jeff for hatin so much on Dark Souls. That Game should of got on the list. I really though Saints Row 3 was gonna win.

Posted by Flappy

As a dude that has put in over 100 hours in Skyrim and 40+ in SR3, I must say that SR3 is my GOTY. In any case, good discussions from both parties and I look forward to the next GOTY discussions.

Thanks for the entertainment, Giantbomb! Keep doing your thing for another year!

LittleBigPlanet 2 was released Jan 18th 2011, received a 5 out of 5 from Jeff, 91 on Metacritic, and not a single mention all week.

If Saint's Row The Third came out in Q1 2011 would anybody be talking about it? No. If Portal 2 came out in November would it have won GOTY? Probably.
