Yes, I mute people all of the time but there are two reasons for it.  One if the aforementioned reason by the OP of whiners and stupid shit.  The other reason is that party chat is disabled so I just mute everyone not in my group and we just treat it like its private chat - we assume that most intelligent users will mute us and those that lack that ...

If you enjoy the grind then you'll be happy with either one.  WoW is much more user friendly than it was at launch though and you will hit the high-end content in no time (in MMO-time) and I really feel that WoW offers a lot more than Aion could ever hope to in the long run.
