Top Games of 2015

  • I had an interesting relationship with Wild Hunt, not really feeling it's general mechanics when I first picked it up but realised there was something special there.

After several patches, I think CD Projekt Red made the game they always wanted and it holds up great, it sucked up most of the time i allotted for games for a solid 6 months, I'm currently working through the first DLC expansion

  • It's hard to quantify what felt special to me about Life is Strange. I went through some tough times at the start of the year and this game just somehow made me feel at peace, like everything would be ok.

It's ending wasnt what I really wanted but the narrative that's told and the characters that emerge are fully formed and easy to get emotional over.

a stunning piece of work by a relatively quiet studio who manage to pick a great soundtrack for their slice of abnormal life videogame.

  • Nothing was more creative that Sam Barlow's Police desk job simulator. That may sound like some kind of sarcastic jab but it honestly isnt.

Over the course of my time with Her Story I did something few games ever make me do, I wrote notes. I got a pen and a pad and i started to draw diagrams of character connections, words to search or dialogue which I felt was meaningful to try and paint a picture of it's (intentionally) disjointed narrative.

The experience in Her Story is without equal and I cant wait to see what Sam makes next.

  • I have tried to play League of Legends and DOTA 2, I hate them both. I didnt hold much hope for Heroes of the Storm but as I had a team of friends who played it on a regular basis I decided to jump in and hot damn, that's a fun MOBA.

The combination of shorter matches, removal of items/shops, smaller roster and a far less toxic community really helped make this game feel approachable but complex enough to still enjoy it today.

  • This one is kind of my white lie because I never actually played Until Dawn much, I sat with a friend while we played it with all the lights off one evening and it really put the teen horror moves on me.

This game nails cheesy teen horror so well and it's narrative choice system (dubbed 'the butterfly effect') actually gives impactful differences on the story.

  • I honestly havent touched a Borderlands game in a few years and the idea of a Telltale story game set in the universe seemed like the least exciting thing they could do but I'm happy to admit I was wrong.

I only played this recently and it's left such a good impression on me, the writing is sharp and funny, dialogue delivery is superb and the story actually goes to places and does things which made me glued to this game until the credits had rolled.

my favourite part is that each episode starts with the equivilent of a TV show opening but each episodes is unique based on the story situation. These short 2 minute videos really helped me make emotional connections with these characters and flesh out their journey.

  • Less of a videogame and more of a message in the bottle, The Beginners Guide lasts a few hours and goes in directions I honestly didn't expect.

It's points on friendship, insight and human understanding really struck a cord with me and how people perceive emotion based on their own bias.

Try it, it's the price (and length) of a cinema trip and well worth that fee.

  • I'm not going to jump on the Undertale hype train, the internet already has enough people doing that.

What I will say is that a friend urged me to play this and over the course of an evening and the next morning, Undertale had me enraptured until it let go.

through it's twists and turns, Undertale envokes some odd and unexpected feelings with it's strong writing, art direction and fantastic sound design. Come to try the odd take on combat, stay for some of the great character writing.

  • Hugely inspired by Super Metroid, Axiom Verge was always going to be loved by me.

It takes the well laid out 'Metroidvania' formula and brings some new toys to the party. While I dont think it's characters or narrative were overly interesting, it's gameplay is flawless and worth a go.

  • I honestly didn't expect this to get into my top 10. Dying Light was originally here but over the past few weeks, Bloodborne has really clicked with me and now I understand the love the fan base has for this game.

Never plays a 'Souls' game before, Bloodborne was something of a novelty for me. I played it to see what the fuss was about and try out one of the more interesting looking exclusives this year. What i discovered is a wonderfully gothic hack and slash game with a punishing curve and a friendly userbase.
